I have a Maria TENNEY/TINNEY who marries a Richard CORNELIUS in 1836 in Tuscarawas County Ohio. Cornelius' were from somewhere in PA and had a stop over in the panhandle of WV before coming to Tuscarawas/Harrison Counties. Unfortunately, I know nothing else of the Tenneys other than Maria Tenney was born in 1812 in MD. Rick In a message dated 9/27/2010 3:16:49 A.M. Hi All, I also have information similar to Carole Clarke regarding the Staley's in Washington County, PA with some mysteries of my own yet to solve. I am descended from the Michael Staley that Carole mentioned through Daniel Staley via his daughter Mary E. Staley and her daughter Grace Arvella Staley and my mom Ruth Thompson Lesso. I have a few family letters that include two from Frederick Staley written while he and Samuel were in the Civil War. I also have one from their brother John W. Staley who somehow ended up in Iowa at some point. (If anyone knows anything about him, I would be interested.) There were also a couple of other siblings to this family but I don't have access to my records tonight. Frederick, Samuel, Mary E., John W. and Aaron (as mentioned by Carole) had at least one more sister who married and was living in Ohio. I believe that our Samuel Staley never married and may have had some challenges that never let him strike out on his own. Frederick's letters from the Civil war told how he and Samuel were doing and some details about where they had travelled, what they were doing in camp and what may happen next. They were signed with both the brothers names but seem to be written by Frederick so I don't think that Samuel could write. He seemed to live with brothers or sisters from the census records. I have yet another letter that I believe was from Samuel's sister (or her husband) in Ohio (I can't remember his or her name at the moment) which mentioned again how Samuel was doing while living there with them. I need to verify that this family was indeed his sister but it seems that someone was always taking care of Samuel. I am thinking that maybe he and the Samuel in Nebraska are two different people. Feel free to ask more questions or pose more theories. I will have better access to my records late tomorrow. I agree with your theory about Mary possible death in NE as a reason for him to leave, but Samuel had several kids while in NE....one of which is Oliver Peter Staley (born 27 SEP 1867, Saline, NE) who as I said was my G Grandfather. If he did move back to PA instead of living with his children.....well must have had a bad fallout. If you had some hard document passed down through family I would go this route, but the census really doesn't give a solid path to go on. I'll keep plugging forward....so if you find anything else out, let me know. Going to see if I can get a lead on a headstone for Mary Faust in NE. A crop would have been a small section of the ear that had been removed. It could have been a V shape or a small arc. The hole would have been just that, a hole made through the ear. The marks were used to distinguish his cattle or sheep from the neighbors. To this day some people still use such marks but most now use ear tags.
First, I'd read this sentence like this with my words in paranthesis. Upon the motion of Andrew Swearingen ordered that his Ear Mark (marks, plural) (which are) a (1) Crop in the Left Ear and a (2) hole in the Right be recorded. A "crop" I'd think would be any size of a "missing piece". For example, when cats fight and an ear is bitten or sliced with a cat's nail, it often leaves a "V" shaped "rip" or cut where the cartilage was torn and because the 2 sides could not be held together during healing, the injury leaves a wide "V" split in the tissues so it looks like it was purposely done. A man could get something like that when working near tree limbs; a cut from the hoof of an unruly animal; a fall onto a sharp object; a knife fight; a bullet that grazed and split the outer ear lobe. I'm not sure about the "hole" unless it was deliberately done? It may have resulted from a localized bacterial infection that ended up erupting through both sides of the ear cartilage. Or, a knife or bullet wounding....but someone would have to have really been off for where they were aiming! Where is this book? Hi Carole, Lizzie wouldn't belong in *that particular* family, BUT since I don't know the parents or siblings for Samuel Flowers, she could be related. We thought Samuel Flowers came from Greene County, but I have absolutely NO clues for parents' names. So Lists .... if you have a Samuel Flowers in your line, let me know. Mine was a Stage Coach driver from Washington PA to Uniontown PA to Frederick Co MD. He married Mary A. Lane from West Bethlehem Twp, daugh of John Lane Sr and Catherine Baker Lane. Later, they lived in South Strabane Twp, once again right along The National Pike (Rt 40) as was Mary A. Lane's childhood home. By 1876, Samuel Flowers died-- no clues about cause of death. Sam and Mary lived on a farm that had belonged to her brother Daniel. When Daniel's grandson got the property, he lost it during the mini-depression that began in the late 1870s-to-early 1800s. Mary had to move to the City of Washington. A 1879 letter to her sister-in-law shows Mary as a broken woman. 1880 Census shows her as HOH with daug. Caroline Flowers (using maiden name) with Mary's grandchild, last name LASH. So, if this guy fits your Flowers family, let me know. Judy Florian
Judy and list, Forgive me if I have this wrong, but I deleted your emails re Flowers. I thought you were looking for Lizzie Flowers. If so, maybe this will help. If not, sorry if I add any confusion to the situation. I was surfing Mr. Fordyce's birth, death, and marriages site and came across a Lizzie Flowers. Here's the info and the link. I hope it helps. For everyone else, I have found when I'm stuck and don't know what else to do I surf the other counties sites! I may not find the area I'm looking for, but I always end up finding something! Mr. Fordyce has done mega things for Greene County! He personally visited every cemetery there and photographed and logged the tombstones. He created CDs of them (5 in all), and he even picked up a few in neighboring counties! He also created a newspaper obit CD for the RP newspaper. The list goes on and on of his accomplishments. If you haven't visited the Cornerstone site, I'm including that link also. I found that sometimes families published obits + in neighboring counties. Plus, if you're like my family, you'll find relatives in Fayette, Wash, Greene, and Westmoreland! So, it never hurts to check them all! I never knew he was this far west in PA! My Stewarts were in the West Middletown/Cross Creek areas back in the late 1700's or so. I just can't seem to connect them with any other Stewarts there. There is nothing more I can get online, and I am unable to travel to the court houses or libraries during the days and hours when they are open. This family was well-respected in the area for years, but they are all gone. I guess I just can't believe there is not someone in the area that still recognizes the family or knows something about them. This Hanna family descends from the first immigrant, Richard who was born in Ireland and immigrated @ 1800, give or take a few years. I believe he had a relative named James already settled in West Middletown, PA. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
