    3. Darwin, I am also confused... Are you trying to match the two John Hoge's in your letter? One was born in 1725 and the other in 1760. One died in 1800 and the other in 1833. The obituary does not link to the man in the first paragraph. Or are you trying to find a link between them? I'll check my entries, but I don't see how these two relate. Is there any other information you can give us to narrow this down. Hope to find the answer. Craig > >I'm confused! Can anyone help with this John HOGE, Esq. 3. List, It should be noted that the Howe Cemetery list noted in the link below is not totally complete. It does not contain the names of those who do not have headstones nor does it have all with headstones. Case in point is my g,g,grandmother Hulda Anne (Howe) Roley Shevlin who is buried without a headstone next to her daughter, Catherine (Shevlin) Cowlishaw, who has a headstone along with her spouse Charles Cowlishaw. They are all buried to the right of the church toward the front of the cemetery. I would very much like to know if there is a full list of Howe Cemetery which lists all buried there with and without headstones. Marilyn, Lake Co. 3. Lola, What particulars do you want to know about John Hoge? He did own the land which is now the city of Washington and he purchased several pieces of land west of the city which were parts of original warrant/patent land. He sold a piece of his land to the committee of men commissioned with the task to build the first courthouse (log) for Washington County. 3. Just a word of caution - I've found errors in this list (for example, a person born in 1857 who served in the Civil War), so I recommend the data be treated with caution, as you would with any secondary or derivative source. That said, kudos to the compiler(s) and thanks to the person who put it online. I'm sure it was a big job reading this cemetery, and having the info online has been a big help. I'm not one to fault anyone for mistakes - I've made plenty of them myself - and having something in hand to confirm is a thousand times better than having nothing at all. William Howe was buried just inside the entrance behind the church when he died Aug. 15, 1820. The cemetery is large and still in use. The oldest stones are directly behind the church and to the right of the church. There is a war memorial in front of the church listing the names of those who fought. Up the hill to the left of the church is a building with veterans' graves around it.  Census: Published in "Miscellaneous Cemeteries, Washington Co., PA", Vol. 1, 1937. It is titled "Howe Cemetery", pub. 1981.  === I'd suggest writing to Citizens Library first for a look-up in the 2 books. They charge between $10 to $12.00 for name searches, last I knew. You might find him through the books. But these "readings" were sometimes not complete; sometimes stones were skipped or missed for some reason. Then, contact the church.
