I still wish Washington PA would digitalize the Court House records and get them online. That would help so many people. This is another reason to support the genealogical societies since they can often help with research questions and give direction. There's so many people across the nation who do society work as volunteers. So thank you for what you're doing too! Judy

    3. Hi Elizabeth, Actually, I have 6 or 7 "sites" now but all are linked together. You can find all of them at the "misc" address which is: http://freepages.misc.rootsweb.com/~florian/ The Washington County PAGenWeb is linked in as well but I try to give its address separately. Coordinator of the Washington County PAGenWeb: http://www.rootsweb.com/~pawashin/ Since you are new, I also have on one of my pages links to other people's sites for Washington PA. We have quite a good selection to choose from. My sites try to include anywhere in the county, but I know the eastern townships the best. But Carol Mounts has Claysville PA and more of the western townships so she knows those better than I do. I've also tried to include individual's "family websites" pertaining to WashPA but I need to re-update my list and links. Remember with my sites, the on-site Google search should find any entries on all of my sites; no need to go to each one to search. Google bots take at least a week to update though. Don't forget to post your info or questions (names with dates and locations) to the List here. There's a lot of great people who are willing to help. Even if the list looks quiet, people are 'here'-- just not posting much. And, don't forget to Browse or Search the List Archives for old topics. 2. J.A. Florian
    3. Hi everyone, This email is mostly a reminder to everyone and to tell new people on the list who I am and what I do. 1. I maintain websites about towns/places/locations/buildings (only) in Washington County PA and people who lived in the county. I include any person or family who lived in the county at *any* time, even if they later moved. Obviously, the websites will never include "everyone" (because I'll run out of space or I'll be dead long before I could ever accomplish that feat ! ;-) 2. While I do have personal research materials at home, much of the information I use on the websites comes from what people send to me (submissions). If you don't submit your family, I likely won't have your family. 3. I was born & raised in Washington County but I do not live there now. I cannot do research for anyone. 4. I do not personally know about all places or all people. Instead, I learn about people and places through people who send me information to put on the websites. 5. I do not have records, maps, or information about *your* family stuck somewhere in my house or under my bed. :-) -- I do not keep records about everyone's families in my house -- I do not have records about other people's families. -- I never will know *your* family unless you tell me about them. 6. I can direct you to places you can do research on your own or where to write. 7. Emails that say "What do you have on ____" or "Tell me all about ______" can be frustrating because my only answers are either: (a) what I have is on the website ... or (b) I have / know nothing. (examples: Tell me about the house I live in now. - or - What do you have on my great-grandparents?) 8. I can be more helpful and direct you to the right places to research if you give specific information and ask a specific question. (Example: My grandfather's full name was ____ and he was born in 1921. How can I find his birth and death information?) I spend a great deal of time answering general emails and explaining why I can only say "I don't know" when I'm asked "Tell me about..." So hopefully this email will help people understand better what I can and cannot do. Regarding submissions, I'm still behind but I continue to work on items sent to me in 2010 as well as materials I have researched myself. Since I've been sick, I'm not able to announce each addition to the websites so just check the sites every few weeks. My websites are linked together and there is a search box on every page. My websites are listed below. 1. Re: [PAWASHIN] Paris Cemetery - Cemetery Damage
    2. J.A. Florian
    3. Thanks for posting this. I'll add the info to the website. The article says the 20-something-driver is jailed for DUI and property (cemetery) damage. So, I'd suggest that any relative or a descendant send a letter to the Court (can call the County Commissioners to ask who the letter should be addressed to). Include a copy of the newspaper article and ask that *your* relative/ancestor's stone be specifically included in the "costs" charged to the defendant. I'd put something like "cost of repair if possible or replacement and installation of a comparably sized stone as the size of the original stone". It may not result in anything, but the Court will at least know that the public is aware of what happened and want the costs paid. Another avenue is to get a police report for the incident and get the man's insurance company's name, then file a claim with the insurance company. With vandalism, accidents, and deterioration, Washington County loses tombstones every year. Judy On Mon, Nov 22, 2010 at 8:14 AM, Julia A. 3. Annie, I would doubt we will hear anything more - same as with vandals. I can't remember seeing who to contact for caretakers, but contacting any local funeral home - would provide the owners and phone numbers of the cemetery. I would suggest a visit and to bring along photos of headstones for comparison. This is an excellent reminder for everyone to take b/w photos of their ancestors/family headstones. Since starting this hobby in the 90s, we have many missing headstones - with no explanations or anyone to question. Good luck, Julia >thanks for sharing this article--- > >will there be a listing of the damaged stones? I have family buried >there--and I can't get there to look-- > >annie

    3. Paris Cemetery - Cemetery Damage FYI, there was an accident Nov. 18, 2010 in the Paris Cemetery, Washington Co., PA; removing a long swatch and a numerous number of headstones along the length of the old Steubenville Pike. This cemetery is located just across the Pennsylvania state line, east of Weirton and contains many burials from the Tri-State area. The news article does not begin to cover the extent of damage and loss. Please visit this news site while it lasts: <http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2010/11/19/man-plows-pick-up-truck-through-steubenville-pike-cemetery/>http://pittsburgh.cbslocal.com/2010/11/19/man-plows-pick-up-truck-through-steubenville-pike-cemetery/ They just missed our family plot by 50 feet and I wonder if they will ever be able to locate descendants of some of these beautiful and old monuments. One family plot now gone - had matching cylinder stones with raised letters. Having visited the accident site two days later, I can't get over how much of the granite pieces are now missing. Please share this info.

If you do a Google search for Horn Cemetery, Marianna, PA, a map should come right up. A website that I have been using quite a bit lately that has an amazing amount of information and tombstone photos is www.findagrave.com. Once on the main page, click on the "search for a cemetery" link on the right hand side. You can also try contacting Citizen's Library in Washington PA. They have a multi volume set of books called Miscellaneous Cemeteries of Washington County. In the 1930s a group of DAR women did censuses for many cemeteries in Washington County and a listing may be in those books. Good luck !
