Worker, Struck By Auto Tuesday Morning DIES IN HOSPITAL Franklin, Sept, 20-Anthony Sutherland of 353 Pacific St., this city, died at the Franklin hospital at 7:10 o'clock Tuesday morning from injuries sustained 23 minutes earlier when he was struck by an automobile on the roadway of the 8th St. bridge. Mr. Sutherland, employed for 28 or 30 years by the Pennsylvania railraod was on his way to his work in the car inspection shop at the Venango yards below Franklin, walking in company with another man. When they neared the end of the bridge nearest the Pennsylvania railroad tracks, an automobile came along and Mr. Sutherland was offered a ride in it. He ran out from the walk to go across the roadway, just as an automobile driven by Harold Mitchell of River Ridge farm, came down the Bredinsburg hill and upon the bridge. It struck Mr. Sutherland and injuries were the result which were immediately seen to be most serious. Mr. Mitchell stopped and took the injured man to the office of Dr. C. M. Wilson, who ordered the patient sent at once to the Franklin hospital. This was done, but he died while being takenn in the elevator up to the ward. Apparently he died from shock. Both of his legs were broken below the knee, one of them in a compound fracture with the broken end of the bone protruding through the clothing. It was also thought he was internally hurt. It is stated by eye witnesses, including the man who was walking with Mr. Sutherland, that Mr. Mitchell was in no way to blame for the accident, as he did not have time to stop after seeing the man coming into the roadway from behind one of the bridge girders.
