I too have seen that 1870 census entry for the family of William and Susan Shepherd and wondered who Frank belonged to. John and Susan (Shepherd) Pryer had four daughters before moving to Missouri. After Susan’s death, John returned the four children to Pennsylvania where they were raised by relatives including grandparents, William and Susan Shepherd. As I remember, part of the 1870 census entry for William Shepherd’s family is difficult to read. The young daughter is definitely a daughter of John and Susan Pryer but her name wasn’t Teressa. John then returned to the Midwest, married a second time and raised another family. I am a descendant of John and his second wife. I suppose it shouldn't be ruled out, and I'm sure it has crossed your mind, that Frank Shepherd was Susan's illegitimate son. Just a possibility. A question for you. You wrote that Susan Pryer died in 1868. I am wondering your source for that year? Over past years I’ve been in touch with a couple of Shepherd researchers (Mrs. Cleveland and Mr. Ferrier). Have you contacted either of them about Frank Shepherd? Good Luck in your search. Wayne Pryer
