Shorts, 87, a retired Emlenton barber and well-known resident of the community, died at 2:45 pm Friday in Franklin Hospital. A resident of the Grandview Health Care Center, he was formerly of 21 Main St., Emlenton. Born October 2, 1894, in Millbrook, Mercer County, he was the son of Jacob and Margaret Gealy Shorts. He retired in 1976 after operating a barbershop at the same location in Emlenton for his entire career. He was known for having cut the hair of seven generations of one family. He was married to the former Edith A. Shively on August 26, 1926. He was an avid sportsman and a member of the Emlenton Rod and Gun Club. He was the oldest member of the Emlenton United Methodist Church where he worshiped for 75 years and was a member of the choir for 50 years. He was a member of the Emlenton Over 55 Club and the Emlenton Chamber of Commerce. He was a former member of the Emlenton IOOF lodge. A 32nd degree Mason, he belonged to Allegheny Valley Lodge 552, F & AM; the Valley of the Oil City Lodge of Perfection and New Castle Consistory. In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, Donald G. Shorts of Silver Spring, Md. And Ronald E. Shorts of Timonium, MD, seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Annamae Gibbons, in 1959, two brothers, Clarance M. Shorts and William Earl Shorts, and a sister, Mrs. Gertrude Lawrence. Funeral Services will be held at 11 am today at the Emlenton United Methodist Church with Rev. Roger Buzard officiating. Interment will be in Emlenton Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Emlenton United Methodist Church Memorial Fund or the Dr. Arthur Phillips Medical Center. Arrangements are being handled by the Criswell-Gardinier Funeral Home of Emlenton.
