Eli Baney was widely and well known throughout the oil country as an experienced and industrious driller, a man of rugged honesty ,tender hearted and a loyal friend. When a mere boy and weighing only ninety pounds he enlisted in the Union army and served to the end of the war and deserved and won the distinction due a brave and faithful soldier. He was dangerously wounded in battle and reported dead. He was a member of Chase Post 50. G.A.R. of this city. Of splendid physique, a giant in strength, it may truthfully be said of him that he was absolutely, fearless. As soldier, driller, and lumberman he more than once looked death squarely in the face, yet never learned to flinch. Memorial Day will bring to his grave the flag he loved, for it was his self appointed duty to decorate the graves of his dead comrades in Cherrytree Cemetary, duty not neglected. Eli Baney was a man always honest in his dealings with others, always ready to assist those less fortunate than himself, kind and friendly to all whom he met. He will be greatly missed in the neighborhood. Durning his long sickness he was always ,when it was warm enough occupying a big chair under a row of maple trees in front of his home and to all who have been in the habit of passing or who lived insight his familiar figure will be long missed. The entire community feels the greatest sympathy for the family on their loss.
