I am hoping someone can give me some ideas for researching my elusive GG and GGG grandfathers, both named John H. SMITH...(Do you know how many John Smiths and John H. Smiths are shown in PA census records from 1790 to 1840? Many, many! With no way to identify them) Known facts: GG Grandfather was John Harris SMITH, born in Allegheny Twp, PA no county given (I understand Venang, Westmoreland, Blair and Butler counties all have an Allegheny Twp, so I'm sending this message to all four) John Harris was born in October 1810. He married Henrietta Murray of Mt. Holly, Burlington Co, NJ Aug 11, 1839. I don't know where, the marriage license doesn't say. The license is signed by L.M. Prettyman, Methodist Episcopal Church. In researching Rev. Prettyman I found him in church minutes of 1843 as being in Snow Hill District assigned to Laurel, PA. (There seem to be many Laurels in PA, and I can't find a Snow Hill at all) I can trace John Harris forward from 1850 on, but not backwards. He moved from PA to Illinois, then Iowa, dying there in 1896. My GGG grandfather was John Harper SMITH, married to Hellen Gornden, both born in PA. That is all I know about him/them. Any help/thoughts as to where to search for records, birth, church, land, etc., will be greatly appreciated. I have no further info but additional old newspaper extracts may be found at RL: www.newspaperabstracts.com/index.php Vern D ///////////////////////////////// Transcribed by Dee Sardoc //////////////////////////////// Stockton Daily Independent Stockton, San Joaquin Co., CA ***************************************** >>THURSDAY, 23 MAR 1865<< AN OLD STOCKTONIAN in LUCK - Frank LUCKENBACH, formerly of this city but now in Franklin, Venango county, Pennsylvania, writes under date of Jan. 30th, 1865, to DOHRMANN & SMALLFIELD, that he has "struck oil," and is now a rich man. We extract the following from the letter: "I am perfectly astonished at this place. It is without exception the greatest money-making place I have seen. California in her best days did not begin to equal it. There is a large scope of country, comprising 8 or 10 towns that is fully as good as this place. The great source of wealth is petroleum. You can see hundreds of wells in operation, each one either pumping or flowing from 15 to 600 barrels per day. This is no fish yarn; it is a candid truth. You will remember of my telling you about my brother making money so fast; well, he far exceeds my wildest expectations. He is now with me at this place. He is now worth $250,000 in cash and bonds in bank at Philadelphia, besides owning, in fee simple, 4 ! good flowing wells, and a tract of 500 acres of oil land in Kentucky, and 1 200 rods wide and over 6 miles long in West Virginia- I am now offered $60,000 for my interest in one of our wells, but I refused the offer, as in the spring I can get $100,000 as easily as I can get $60,000 now. So you see I have not lost anything by coming home." Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. For years, I have been searching for Latchaw photos. My Dad died October 22, 2007 without knowing what his Grandfather, Isaiah looked like. I brought several old photos that belonged to my Grandmother, Dora Latchaw Luton. One of my new found cousins was looking at a photo of my Great Grandparents, Isaiah and Clara Kinder Latchaw's home, taken in the 1800's. She said she knew where that house was and it is a house on the main street through Barkeyville. The address is 5484, Rt. 8, Harrisville, PA. Anyone who goes through Barkeyville would know the house. It is a two story blue with white trim. When my Great Grandparents lived there, it had a porch on the front of it. I know that style of house was pretty common in the 1800's so I didn't work up the courage to knock on the door. If anyone knows the people who live there, it would be nice to know if it was the old Latchaw homestead. I have an enlarged photo of the old homestead that I would love to send to them. I may go ahead and take the chance but if anyone knows for sure, please let me know. My Dad, Dal! e Luton, died October 22, 2007. The one thing he always wanted was to see what his Grandfather looked like. He always talked about a photo of Isaiah Latchaw that was left in the attic when the family moved to Oklahoma. I would love to find out it is still in the attic. OK, I'm dreaming. Ha! Seriously, any help would be appreciated....... Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
