    1. [PAVENANG] Elizabeth (Sutley/Cousins) Johnson???
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: rnwhiting1313 Surnames: Sutley, Cousins, Johnson, Graham, Ermel Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.pennsylvania.counties.venango/6406/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Samuel Cousins, son of William and Mary Ann (?) Cousins of Sugarcreek Twp, Venango County, PA, was born c1781 and died after 10 August 1814, but before 1815, probably at Sugarcreek Twp, Venango County, PA. After extensive research, his wife's name is unknown, but in accordance with the 1810 US census was born between 1784 and 1794. Samuel had four children, or Mary Ann, William, Samuel and Emeline. Recently, I discovered that an "Elizabeth (Sutley/Cousins), a widow" married a James Johnson c1815. Their son, John H. Johnson was born 11 August 1815 in Canal Twp, Venango County, Pa. James was born supposedly 6 May 1785 in Ireland and Elizabeth supposedly on 5 April 1791. James became an owner of 200 acres of land, location unknown. Four other children were supposedly born of this couple, or Sarah R., Robert H., Harrison R. and Hugh. (Please see History of the Western Reserve, Volume III, pages 1378-9, by Harriet Taylor Upton, published in 1910 by the Lewis Publishing Co., Chicago, IL.) Please note that there is an Elizabeth Sutley, born 5 April 1786 at Reading, Berks County, PA, d/o of Christian and Eve (Ermel) Sutley. The first and last information about Elizabeth is when she as "Elizabeth Graham" sells her right to her mother's estate, or 100 acres, to William and George Sutley on 20 November 1841. So.did Elizabeth Sutley, d/o Christian Sutley Sr, marry (1) Samuel Cousins c1805? After Samuel's death, did Elizabeth (Sutley) Cousins, a widow, marry James Johnson c1815? And lastly, did Elizabeth (Sutley/Cousins) Johnson, perhaps a widow again, marry (3) an unknown Graham by 1841. A last note is that Sarah Cousins, another daughter of Christian Sr., and sister to Elizabeth, married William Cousins, Jr., Samuel's brother in 1809. I know I have seen a headstone for George and Anna, possibly two small ones, but my grandmother was in a hurry to get to her sisters plot. I have never seen an obit for my ggmother so that is special, I have seen transcriptions (edited) for George Lewis so seeing them both will be wonderful. George's didn't copy very well but will attach both. They are buried in Grove Hill cemeteryLot 077 Sec. 016. Also buried in same section an Edward Lewis (12/27/1926) and Mary Lewis Davis (1/21/1929). The headstone book doesn't show a listing for one. The next chance I get, I will walk that section to see if I can find a headstone and if I do I will take a picture and forward to you. 1. [PAVENANG] TITUS c1880s Trying to solve mystery
    2. Sue Mickley
    3. I cannot find the burial site for Bessie and her father, Townsend John TITUS, could the funeral and burial actually have taken place in Oil City - need to know if there is any record of their burial in Oil City, they were Members of the Society of Friends (Quakers): Bessie died at home the same week as her father who was traveling in Colorado. Bessie's clothes caught on fire from a "wayward" match and she burned to death at 1 1/2 years old. Townsend Titus, her father, died of consumption at 2:00am in Pueblo, CO, while stopping at a hotel on his way home. He probably went to Colorado to partake of the "healing springs" at Colorado springs for his consumption. At the time there were Apache raids in Colorado. It is not known if Townsend knew of his daughter's death when he died. An Oil City newspaper said that both their bodies were transported to Brooklyn for the funeral on August 17, 1881 (Sunday) at the home of Darius Allen. They were supposedly buried together in Brooklyn - site unknown. Nettie never returned to Oil City and she never remarried. She died in England while visiting her actress daughter, Gertrude, on Dec. 27, 1903 from complications due to Diabetes. County tax assessment records found the following: Oil City 1st District - 1877-1882 - no record Oil City 2nd District - 1876-1878 - no record 1879 - Thompson Titus (likely Townsend); bookkeeper, valuation $150 1880 - Townsend Titus, bookkeeper, valuation $100 1881 - Townsend Titus, bookkeeper, valuation $100 Venango County Courthouse Grantor/Grantee Indices - Townsend did not own property while living in the County. Franklin Library, PA Room - Obituary Files: Oil City Derrick - 13 August 1881 Bessie Titus, died August 12 in Oil City. The daughter of Townsend and Nellie Titus, aged 1 year and 8 months. Oil City Derrick - 15 August 1881 Townsend Titus died at South Pueblo, Colorado of heart disease on August 14. Body sent to New York where Mrs. Titus' parents reside. Aged 42 years. The above obituaries are on microfilm in Oil City. From the notations on the index cards, there are two articles for Bessie and two for Townsend. Please let me know if you would like copies of these articles. I also want to find out more information on the C.M. Titus who is frequently mentioned on a book on Oil City that I have been reading. I would like to determine if he was somehow related to Townsend Titus.

The card in the library shows George dying 29 Dec. 1901 and came from the newspaper (Blizzard) dated 30 Dec. 1901. Wasn't a card for Ann. George born 1840 in England and supposed to be burried in Grove Hill which I couldn't find in the cemetery book. Hopefully I will get a chance to check the library microfilm tomorrow to see if I can clarify it. Also will check for obit for Ann seeing as you have given me a date of death.
