I am trying to trace them out of Allegheny county but the only associations I have found seem to be in Venango co. One of the early Downings married Ann Gilchrist and she had a son A. G. Downing. There is an Andrew Downing married to Levina Walters in the 1850 census. What I would like to know if any of his children were named Andrew Gilchrist Downing. Would appreciate any help on the Downing's of Venango co., particularly those associated with the Gilchrists. Thank you.

I don't think it would be possible for William D.'s wife Margaret Higgins to be the mother of Andrew since she was born in 1814, and he in 1824. The only possibility that I can imagine is if there was a previous wife of William. I will not rule anything out yet. I have found it very difficult to get any additional information on my McCoys, but I will always keep trying.

Captain Hart commanded the garrison at Fort Franklin during the late 1780's into the early 1790's. He arrived at Fort Franklin from Fort Pitt. My fourth great grandfather, William Cousins, served under him at Fort Franklin. I am curious to know where Captain Hart was originally from. I suspect it may have been Virginia. Pa Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Pa/Venango?read=2021 Surname: McCoy, Black, Shawgo, Lancaster, Hostetler ------------------------- Shiela, My grandmother's name was Hazel McCoy, her father's name was Henry Wilt McCoy, m. Hannah Elizabeth Shawgo in 1895. After a short stay in Franklin after their marriage, they moved to Warren and Forrest Co's. I also know that Henry's father was Andrew, b. 1824 according to family records, and had a wife named Susan Ann. Would this Andrew be the right age to be the same one as the "Andy" you speak of? I know my McCoys resided much of the 1800's in Franklin, and some of them also into the 1900's. I have also found Andrew and his family in Armstrong Co. during the 1850 census. I also know that Andrew served in the Civil War in the PA 78th Infantry. Let me know if you can make any connections here.
The Green Cemetery, just across the line into Crawford Co. was catalogued this past fall by the Venango Co. Historical Soc. cemetery committee and is to be included in the next [Vol. 8] Cemetery book being prepared for publication. "Plum Township". Sylvia
Picture of Vinca Minor commonly known as Periwinkle or Ground Myrtle. Usually is on or around most old cemeteries in this area. http://www.canr.uconn.edu/plsci/mbrand/v/vinmin/vinmin1.html Betty, made a couple more phone calls, working on information about your Green Farm and Cemetery. I have an appointment on Sunday to ask some questions of a man who lives near by there, on Reiser Road in fact. Please make a list of what you would like to know and email it to me. I'll try to get your questions answered. This gentleman is 75 or older, talking on the phone is difficult because his hearing is poor. You'll love this! His grandmother on his mother's side was Loretta Green she married a Strawbridge. His grandmother on his father's side was Rebecca Reeser. I did not say the cemetery was in bad shape. I said the tombstones were. The inscriptions are almost nonexistent. Many are cracked or have fallen over. According to the township tax collector and another octarian historian in the area, a boy scout troop cleaned that cemetery up a couple years ago or so. They were the ones who put the fence around it. The octarian historian said that cemetery should be indexed at the Crawford County Historical Society. It is still inside a pasture fence. The land is now owned by the Titusville District Justice, Amy Nicols and her husband. They build a new house on another section of the land sometime in the last few years. I couldn't get in touch with her tonight. She might know more of the history of her property. Talking with Mary Ralston, the 81 year old lady who writes the Troy Center News for the Titusville paper still, she had a teacher at the Diamond School that was a Mrs. Green. Her name was Bertha Cauvel Green. She came from Dempseytown and was married to Ernest Green. Ernest had a brother, Merle, who also lived in Diamond. Mrs. Ralston was interesting. She came originally from Franklin. Her father was Otis J. Skelley, who was once Sherriff. And she had an old aunt and uncle, Bill and Bertha Hawse, who used to live just above the Peters Cemetery in Venango County. As I said, make of list of what you want to know. I certainly enjoyed talking to these people, I learned some more I didn't know about the area and its people of the past and present. Cindy
This second letter is from Wally Martin. If anyone has any information about Wally, please let me know. Thanks. Aug. 1, 1945 Philippines From: Sgt. W. J. Martin 33700239 375th T.C. Gp. 56th T.C.S. APO 74 c/o P.M. San Francisco, Calif. To: Mr. and Mrs. Harry Haylett 1541 Elk St. Franklin, Pennsylvania Hi Folks, I hope youre not too surprised at hearing from me after such a long time. To tell you the truth, Ive been meaning to write to you folks for quite a while but never got around to it. I have an ulterior motive though, as youll later find out. First of all I guess Id better tell you a little about myself. Im over here in the Philippines flying with the Troop Carrier Command. Were flying Curtiss C-46s and Im more than satisfied with the whole deal. Its easy work and the time seems to go pretty fast because Im doing something Ive always wanted to do and thats fly. Im a radio operator, often known as "static-chasers" but please dont hold that against me. Our outfit has covered the Pacific pretty well and Ive seen a lot of places but so far I havent seen anything to compare with the country back home. As far as Im concerned, I wouldnt trade one acre of Allegheny River bottom for all the islands in the Pacific. Thats what I think of this part of the world and am positive that my mind wont change. Now comes the big important part. Hows the old Allegheny producing this year at Oleopolis? Im sort of anxious to hear about it because Oleopolis is still my favorite bass hunting water, same as it is with Andy, and Id like to keep tabs on it. Please help me out by writing and letting me in on the dirt. The last letter I got from Andy and Marie was about two weeks ago and from that I gathered that they were still doing good at Scott Field, Ill. I hope they get to stay there for the duration. Andy brought his Oldsmobile to Illinois with him so every chance he gets, he chases around the Illinois lakes and ponds catching bluegills and crappies. The fish arent as big but Ill bet he has a whale of a good time. Wish I could do the same right now. Boy, Ill bet Penny is really a big girl now. Thats the trouble with being in the Army. When you get back, everything will be so changed and different that youll feel like a stranger even among the folks you know. I guess it cant be helped though, so theres no use in griping about it. When this war is over, I think our entire fishing gang will be up to your place to rent your cottage. If that happens, youd better anchor the place down because I know Ive been dreaming about the place these last two years and Andy is in the same boat, so well be plenty happy to get back and our over-enthusiasm may get the better of us. Thats just a subtle warning of what may happen. No kidding though, it will be heaven when that day comes. Well, I think Ive blabbed enough so take care of yourselves and please drop me a note letting me know how things are going in my favorite part of the state. Your friend, Wally
To celebrate the upcoming Memorial Day I thought I would share some letters that were sent to my mom and dad from their Venango Co. friends who were serving in the Armed Forces. This first one is from Walt Shook. Date: Sept. 15, 1944 From: Pvt. W. A. Shook 13057335 Hg., 317 Troop Carrier Group APO # 565 San Francisco To: Harry and Betty Haylett 1541 Elk Street Franklin, Penna. USA Greetings, Had a V-mail from you yesterday that took only 27 days in contrast to most of my airmail that has been arriving in from 7 to 10. Recently I had a letter from mother in six days And then they try to encourage the use of V-mail "because its faster". Your canned peaches dont even sound appetizing. I think Ive had them on an average of two out of every three days since Ive been in N.G. and in spite of the fact that I used to think they were delicious. Im almost as tired of them as of bolly beef. Here our food is decidedly better than where I was, chiefly because we have a plane which goes to Australia every week and brings back fresh meat, vegetables, etc. Tonight I drank nearly a quart of fresh milk with my supper and I cant describe the enjoyment of it. It was the first milk I ever had in N. G. Say, come to think of it you also mentioned canning spaghetti sauce. Now there youve got something. We get spaghetti frequently but never with a real sauce and many of us often talk of how wed like to go somewhere like Savoldis and eat till we couldnt get up. Thats just one more thing I intend to catch up on when I get home. Thanks for asking me about something for Christmas. Mother and Kitty have also done that and, believe me, I cant think of a single thing that I could use here now. I have everything around and a lot of superfluous junk, including one whole barracks bag of photo stuff. I do enjoy the "Life" very much and eagerly look forward to each copy of it. In fact I think every copy is read by at least 15 men before it is discarded. Not more than two or three copies of it have failed to arrive and so if you do not want to get me something Id appreciate that magazine more than anything I can think of. Today has been my first really busy day in this outfit. I did some work in the .. (tear in paper) this morning and this afternoon I helped remove most of the radio equipment from one of our planes to clean it up, check its condition, and in general see that it is all in good working order. This is done every 100 hours that the plane is in the air. When I came back to my tent I was quite happy that I hadnt stayed there for the afternoon. The trees in the jungle are all rotton and often when they look as if an earthquake couldnt move them theyll come down in even a light breeze. Well, thats what happened today. A large tree fell and hit the corner of our tent and one large limb went right across my cot. When I saw it I took one big swallow then the first thing that came into my mind was that air mattress. It was quite a relief to find it O.K. I dont know what Id do if anything happened to that. Thats about all for now. I want to write to Elsie and then I think Ill go to bed early. Did you know that Elsie is planning to get married next month. She wrote me about it and I was happy to hear it. Love, Walt

I have had several e-mail responses as well as the message board response. Today in the mail I received a copy of a letter that my grandfather O'Hare had written to his nephew on the occasion of the nephew's fourth birthday. It is this grandfather who was born in Shamburg. Now I know what his handwriting was like - and more importantly - it was an almost poetic message and gave me a sense of his personality. Again, many thanks for the kind and quick responses. Sally
