Posted on: Venango Co. Pa Query Forum Board URL: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Pa/Venango?read=2071 Surname: Simcox, Davis, Jones, Henderson, Marshall, Turner, Krickbaum, Kennedy, Adams, Seaton, Muse, Walker, McCracken, Reynolds, Allen, McElhaney, Bartlett ------------------------- Shadrach SIMCOX, son of William SIMCOCK and Martha DAVIS, was born about 1767 in Kent Co., MD, and on 20 Jan 1792 in Faggs Manor Presbyterian Church, in Londonderry Township, Chester County, PA, married Eleanor JONES who was born 1 Jun 1770 in PA. Shadrach died on 14 Jul 1833 in Venango Co., PA and Eleanor on 23 Oct 1859 in Venango Co., PA. Both were buried in the Simcox Cemetery, Mineral Twp., Venango, PA. The cemetery is now located on Pennsylvania State Game Lands. Shadrach & Eleanor were members of Faggs Manor Presbyterian Church in Londonderry Township, Chester County, PA. He is presumed to be a brother to William Simcox, who was in the 1790 census of Londonderry Township. William's household consisted of 4 females, and 2 males over 16. Shadrach was probably the second male over 16. By 1798, Shadrach was living in Cross Creek township, Washington County,Pennsylvania, where he is listed in the tax list and is taxed or 400 acres. He is enumerated in the 1800 census of that township and at that time his family consisted of 1 male and 1 female age 26-45 (1755-1774), and 1 male and 2 females under 10 (1790-1800). By February 1806, Shadrach had moved to Venango County, where he was one of the earliest settlers. He received a grant of personal property from Robert Jones (probably his father-in-law) and in 1812, purchased 300 acres in French Creek Township from John Jones. Over the next 10 years or so, he purchased additional acreage and resided there for the rest of his life. He was enumerated in the 1810 census of French Creek Twp and his household had grown to 11 members, 4 males under 10 (1800-1810), 1 male and 1 female age 10-16 (1794-1800), 2 males and 1 female age 16-26 (1784-1794), and 1 male and 1 female age 26-45 (1765-1784). It appears as if his oldest daughter's husband was residing in the household. Family tradition maintains that Shadrach served in the War of 1812, but no record of his services has yet been found. However, record has been found that he was paid on 1 Apr 1814 for expenditures relating to the defense of Erie, Pennsylvania. His first cabin was located on the Indian Path, later known as the Venango Path. Soldiers going to Erie from Pittsburgh and other points followed this old military road, traces of which may still be seen. Shadrach appears in the 1820 census of French Creek Twp.His household included 4 males and 2 females under 10 (1810-1820), 1 male age 10-16 (1804-1810), 1 male age 16-18 (1802-1804), 1 males 18-26 (1794-1802), 1 male and 1 female age over 45 (before 1775). He is also enumerated in the 1830 census of French Creek township. After Shadrach's death, Eleanor lived with her son, Davis. Together with Davis and his wife, Adaline, she was one of the first members of Center Methodist Episcopal Church which was organized in Mineral Township in 1844. Many of the members of this congregation had earlier been associated with Sandy Creek church. >From the census records, it appears that Shadrach and Eleanor had at least 13 children, but only 11 have been identified. The others probably died as infants. Children: 1 Mary Smith SIMCOX was christened 2 Sep 1792 at Faggs Manor Presbyterian Church, Londonderry Twp., Chester, PA, and about 1812 probably in Venango Co., PA, married Charles HENDERSON, son of Robert HENDERSON, who was born in 1779 probably in Scotland. They had 9 children. 2 William SIMCOX was born on 14 Jun 1794 in Washington Co., PA, and about 1820 probably in Venango County, PA, married Jane MARSHALL, daughter of James and Martha MARSHALL, who was born 14 Feb 1804 in of Mercer Co., PA. William died on 5 Sep 1850 and Jane died on 12 Jun 1860. Both were buried in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery, Mineral Twp., Venango Co., PA. Robert was a trader, dealing in Yankee clocks, cattle horses and other objects and was also a real estate speculator. Robert died about 1850/1856 in Mercer Co., PA. After Robert's death, Jane moved with her children to Illinois, settling first in Knox County and later in Marion County. Jane died after 1880 in Marion Co., IL. 5 John SIMCOX was born in 1803 French Creek Township., Venango, PA, and married Lydia ADAMS. They had 4 known children. After John's death, Lydia was remarried to James SEATON. 6 Nathan SIMCOX was born on 5 Aug 1805 in FrenchCreek Twp., Venango, PA,and married Nancy who was born 21 Jun 1812. Nancy died on 4 Mar 1835 and was buried in Coolspring Cem., Coolspring Twp., Mercer, PA. Nancy's maiden name was probably MUSE. She was buried next to Samuel MUSE who died Aug 15, 1839, probably her brother, and near William L. MUSE, died 3 January 1852,age 67, probably her father. Nathan and Nancy had no known children. Nathan married (2) about 1837, Mary HENDERSON, daughter of William HENDERSON, who was born 9 Apr 1812 in Venango Co., PA. Mary was also known by the nickname Polly. Her first husband, Samuel Walker, was killed about three years after their marriage when a load of lumber upset on him. She was left to raise their daughter, Nancy Walker. You need dates (the rule I use is 30 years +- 5 years between generations, it seems to work for me) and as much detail as you can give. I can not help you but there are several fine people that can assist you in the Armstrong and Clarion County & Clarion County Historical Society query boards. I was going to recommend a person but I think he is more into the business of genealogy and can be quite rude in my opinion if not approached accordingly to his protocol. dh
