Pa Obituaries Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Pa/VenangoObits/491 Surname: Adams, Griffin ------------------------- Obit Abstract Venango Spectator October 20, 1887 Mrs. Raymond Adams, of Frenchcreek Township, near Polk Borough, met with a terrible death last Monday. She had gone to the barn for eggs and while gathering them in the hay loft she slipped and fell to the barn floor. Leaning against the side of the hay mow was a pitchfork, prongs down, but the handle of the fork had been broken, leaving a sharp point at the end. Upon this fork-handle the unfortunate woman struck in her descent the sharp end entering her abdomen to the depth of 15 inches. Unaided and alone she pulled the fork handle out of the wound, laid it beside her, and was found dead shortly after. Mrs. Adams was about 55 years of age. Her maiden name was Rebecca Griffin and she was a daughter of the late Isaac Griffin and a sister of Floyd and M. P. Griffin of this city.

It is about 5 miles east of Oil City and 18 miles north of Parker. This makes a lot more sense than the Green Oak area of Armstrong Co. My question now is, when did Green Oaks come into existence? Is it possible that in 1875 it was known as Greanoke? Any help greatly appreciated... Ken Burt
Posted on: Venango Co. Pa Query Forum Reply Here: http://cgi.rootsweb.com/~genbbs/genbbs.cgi/USA/Pa/Venango/2253 Surname: Burt, Burtt, Burts, Bovard, Bovaird ------------------------- My grandfather, David Andrew Burt, born June 27, 1875, lists his birth place as Greanoke, PA. I am unsure if this is Green Oaks, Venango Co., the Green Oaks area of Armstrong Co. or Greenock, Allegheny Co. However, I am beginning to think it is Green Oaks, Venango Co. if that is somewhere near Butler and Armstrong Counties. He lists his parents as John Burt and Rebecca Bovaird. David married a Martha ? and had a son, Kenneth Melville, b. Dec 4, 1896 in Parkers Landing, PA. There may have been another son, Richard, also. The reason I am leaning towards Green Oaks is that there are Bovards (includes Bovairds) in Butler Co. right next to Parkers Landing, Armstrong Co. So if David was born in Venango Co., moved to Parkers Landing to work (he was a glass blower and Parker had a glass production house around that time), it would add up more than the Green Oak area of Armstrong, which is actually father away I think. We also have an oral history that our surname spelling was changed with either my grandfather or ggfather. My father thought it was spelled Burtt, but it is very possible it was spelled Burts, and there are Burts in the lower right corner of Venango Co! Does anyone know where Green Oaks is in relation to Butler/Armstrong Co.? Does any of this set off anything for anyone here? ANY help would be greatly appreciated! Ken Burt Atlanta, GA.

Angela, Might this help you? Origin and Spelling of the Name Little or no authority resides in the vagaries of ancient spelling and still less has survived the ignorance of alleged copyists of old records. Each church or civil clerk was a law unto himself, and this self-made law was not akin to those of the Medes and Persians, for it continually altered. Sometimes in one entry the same name will be spelled in two and even three distinct ways. The name Tietsoort under various spellings appears as: Dietsoordt, Dietsoor, Ditsoort, Ditzoort, Ditchious (?), Dizo, Hiesoor, Pezard, Teachout, Telfoot, Tetsoort, Teso, Tetzo, Tezzo, Thouyswoint (?), Tietshoom, Thitis, Tichort, Tichout, Tietsoord, Titscoot, Titcot, Tietsoort, Tieksoort, Tietzoort, Tiedsoort, Tietshout, Tutsco (?), Tietsoo, Tieshood, Tiesoort, Titscout, Titzer, Tisso, Tissot, Tizzo, Tizoor, Tjietsoord, Tjetsoort, Tyloort, Titort, Titsworf, Titsworth, Teehore, Titchsord. These variations illustrate the difficulty experienced in indexing old names and in using an index when prepared by one ignorant of all these different forms of the same name. The name, modernly, sometimes appears as Tietsoort, but more frequently as Titsworth, Titzer and Teachout. In New Jersey and along the Delaware Valley and in Orange Co, NY it is Titsworth. In Saratoga Co., NY, it is Tichout. "Oort" in Dutch and German means "place." A Friesian scholar says "Tietsoort" means "Tiete's Place," or the place or region(?) of Tietes. ----- Original Message ----- From: Angela Hans <Angelcom@concentric.net> To: <PAVENANG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 29, 2000 4:14 PM Subject: [PAVENANG-L] Tietsoort Name Origin > Posted on: Venango Co.
