    1. John & Letitia (Anderson) Singleton - War of 1812 Widow's Pension
    2. Roger N. Whiting
    3. I have obtained a copy of Letitia (Anderson) Singleton's widow's application for a pension based on John Singleton's military service during the War of 1812. Letitia, as Letticia Singleton and as a resident of Franklin, Venango County, PA, filed a widow's pension application (R09752) on 31 December 1872 based on her husband's (John Singleton) service in the War of 1812. She further stated that John enlisted in Pittsburgh, PA and served in Captain Lithco's company, Col. Purvine's regiment from the end of August 1812 through the end of December 1812. (Please note that other records state that he served as a private in the 2nd Regiment of the Pennsylvania Militia commanded by Colonel Purviance.) She also stated that she and John were married on 14 February 1814 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and that he later died at Franklin, Venango County, PA, on 2 May 1859. Letitia (Anderson) Singleton's pension application was later rejected on 5 December 1873, but her pension file provides no reason for the rejection. The rejection was most likely due to her death that occurred on 7 April 1873. Roger N. I suspect that the Jolly, McGinnis families are all connected somehow, but I do not have your particular Thomas in my genealogy program. I am still interested in any McGinnis connections in the Venango, Butler or Clarion Counties from 1800 through 1950. Distant cousins who have posted in this thread, Brenda Seigworth and Jeane Turk may have addition Jolly family information. I recently changed my email address.

I apologize that I did not see your message prior to today, however I was very excited to read of a possible connection of my lines of research and your records. Family records show my paternal grandmother Arvilla "Rose" Hunter, was born in Franklin, Venang County, PA in May 1901. Her father's name was Hunter, her mother's maiden name Geseky. The 1930 Federal Census for Chicago Illinois shows a Belle Hunter head of household, with Arvilla Hunter daughter living with her along with my father, Donald James Hughes. Rose had married an Oramel Hughes in Chicago around 1921. Oramel died in 1926. Arvilla Rose (Rose Arvilla on her death certificate in 1991) had two sisters, Elsie and Esther. The Chicago census of 1930 shows a 2nd daughter of Belle Hunter as Elizabeth E. We are thinking it is either Elsie or Esther. Our family believes Belle Hunter is the same as Florence Belle Geseky, so I am very hopeful that your Florence Geseky is the same person as my great-grandmother. Family records also show this Florence was the daughter of a Hester Ritenour married to a James Geseky, hopefully again confirmation of your records showing Hester Ann Ritenour although married to a Peter Geseky not James. I have in my posession an interesting birth record of Rose Arvilla Hunter, however it is not an original issue, it is one based on an afidavit by my grandmother and her sisters and issued at a much later date. I found a family tree postd online designating the Ritenour and Grimm lines back to 1600's in Germany. I have attached a pdf file including that line as possibly linked to Hester Ritenour. I look forward to comparing records with you and I will try not to miss any future correspondence. Sincerely, Michael Hughes 704 5th Avenue Salt Lake City, UT 84103 [email protected] 801-322-3428 home

It is a tiny (maybe 350-400 people, probably less) village between Olean & Portville, Cattaraugus County, New York. It is located on state route 417 beween the two larger towns. This part of Cattaraugus County is within 5 miles of the PA border. McKean County, PA is just across the state line. I would check the Cattaraugus County website at http://www.rootsweb.com/~nycattar/ and do a search at the site. Also contact the Cattaraugus County Historical Society if interested.

    2. Bob Kuehn
    3. I believe that there was an epidemic in the early to mid 1870's in Venango and neighboring counties. 3 brothers (ages ranging from 15-24) all died in 1872 of "Nervenfieber" (Typhoid Fever). They had lived in Oil City for awhile, but the funerals were held in Brady's Bend (Armstrong County) where other family members lived. ----- Original Message ----- Does anyone know if there was an epidemic of some kind in Venango, County in 1875. Three children died within 12 days of one another. Jimmy Calery Stubble (not sure if the first name is correct) died March 31.1875, age 6 years, 4 months and 5 days, Eva Stubble (again, not sure of the first name) died April 9, 1875, age 3 years 5 months 13 days, and Charles Stubble died April 12, 1875, age 2 years, 4 months, 12 days. I bellieve William Stubble and Mary Best Stubble were the parents of the children. If anyone knows anything about these children, their parents or the possible cause of death I would appreciate any information you can give me. Thank you. Gloria

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0dB.2ACI/2612.1 Message Board Post: I am looking for my cousins, the descendants of the following family: Mary Angeline Lamb And James J. Shriver Mary Angeline Lamb, daughter of Hezekiah Lamb and Hannah Small, was born in 1857, in Dallas Co, IA. She was married to James J. Shriver, who was born in 1848. Very little is known at this time about the family, but it is believed they lived in Fremont Co, IA, until the time they went to the Oklahoma Indian Territory, to find better circumstances. Hannah kept a letter written by James, during his struggles. The date is not clear, but would have to be before Angie died in 1894. She was approximately 37 years old, and was buried in the Spring Grove Cemetery, in Anthony, KS. This may be because James was still unsettled, and Angie’s sister, Naomi, offered the space in their own family plot. Anthony is near the Oklahoma border, and not far from where James was. Years later, in 1921, James died and was buried beside Angie. Chn: 1. Hale Shriver, lived at Ponca City, OK; had a son Burgis, a lawyer. who lived there. We have had bad luck since we came south, but I think I can get land here yet. I am about 125 miles south of Anthony at present on the Rock Island road. I am hauling freight for the government to Fort Sill. There is more work here than any place I have been. Crops was good here, corn is 35 cts per bu. Hale and me have the grip but are getting better. When I am settled I want my children, but I know you can do better for them, than I can, and that is my sole object in life, to do the best I can for them. I would do as Angie requested and try to get close to you, but crops are too uncertain in Jewell Co, (KS) Tell John I thank him for the interest he takes in the welfare of the children. This is all I! can think of at present. Write soon as you get this Direct to Rush Springs, Ind Ter your son J. J. Shriver” I know nothing about the antecedents of James, either.
