You might also contact the Pennsylvania Room, Franklin Public LIbrary, 421 12th Street, Franklin, PA 16323, 814-432-5062. They have a huge collection of obituaries and a wonderful staff. If you give them the name, the will tell you if they have an obit. Not all deaths were reported in the local papers. It was not until recently that obits of residents were printed, and usually it depended on the family and the financial situation of the family. Good luck!

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/0dB.2ACI/4098.2 Message Board Post: I believe all or almost all of the Pennsylvania counties had a county home which was often known as the "poor house" or "poor farm". In the days before social secutity, unemployment benefits, and other social programs, people often had no choice but to go to the poor farm. Entire families might be there if a father lost his job or died and often the inmates were old, ill, had mental problems or were alcoholic. Most of these county homes are still in existence. They are usually still run or at least supervised by the county comissioners in some way and serve as nursing homes. Most are remodeled or have new buildings and facilities and care is usually comparable to private nursing homes. The county nursing homes have been renamed--probably to take away the stigma that was attached to being in a county home. The one in Venango County is now called Sugarcreek Station. I live in York County and the county home here is called Pleasant Acres. Formerlly I lived in Cambria County wh! ere the county home is called Laurelcrest Manor. The U.S.GenWeb site for Venango County has some good information on the Venango County Home. On the left hand side of the page click on "Poor Farm" and you will see a picture of the old original county home building which has been extensively remodeled and is still in use along with a newer building. That site also has a list of burials in the Venango County Home cemetery. Many of the county homes have old cemeteries and some still have an occasional burial. I have checked with the county homes in Venango County and Cambria County and they have good records on the people who were inmates. If you are related to a former inmate, I think they would allow you to see the old record books.
My great grandfather was also in the Venango Poor House. I found the information in the Venango Co. Poor House Register Index, Franklin, PA Library. Other history tells me that "Died in the 'County Home', Rocky Grove...He was hurt when a derrick collapsed on the GRIMM farm in Nov 1897, a week before his father burned to death...He lived 13 yrs. after the accident." Here's the info I received from the Poor House Register Index: James L. Card entered the Venango Co. Poor House June 29, 1907, age 59 yrs.; not able to work; residence Rocky Grove; can read and write; paralysis; divorced. The info and pictures on the web page are a great asset also. Happy Hunting, Janet Card Headley
Jane, I think you'll find all the information you want about the Venango County Home/Poor Farm on the Venango Co. website. http://www.rootsweb.com/~pavenang/ After you've entered the web site, scroll down the pane on the left of your screen until you come to "POOR Farm". There's also a listing of 'occupants' of its cemetery. Joyce Neidich has posted a 'mini-history' here for all to read. I have a distant relative on my family tree who spent his final years in the "Poor House"/County Home. According to the records, he was committed by the commissioners in 1906, their records show he could not 'write his name, he was abstinent, not able-bodied and sane'. His disease was 'old age' (he was 87 when he died). Under their notes of 'how discharged' it says "dead"! If you read Joyce's history of the poor farm, this fits--commissioners oversaw the 'farm'--and its 'occupants' were indigent, disabled and insane. (Apparently this relative met two of those criteria) I don't know for sure, but I feel it was likely he was in that institution because of poverty--and probably had no one to care for him at home. Fast forward to 1989 - the building used for the Poor Farm was then known as Venango Manor, an 'Old Folks Home'. My aunt was a resident there for the last couple years of her life, dying there in 1989. The facility may still exist--I'm not sure. I don't have documentation for the County Home, but I was born and reared in Venango County, and I will tell you what I remember. Some of the residents were indigent, such as widows or orphans, or people who had lost their job. Others were physically handicapped, and did not have family members who were able or willing to care for them. The County Home was a residential facility located on a large farm, and the income from the farm provided financial support for the Home. I belive that produce from the farm was sold in Franklin, the county seat town nearby. I am guessing that the "boarders" were those who could pay for their care, and the "inmates" were supported at county expense, but that is only a guess on my part.
