Bucknell rises on a hill overlooking the Susquehanna River in central Pennsylvania, a site chosen by the Philadelphia Baptists who founded the university in 1846. First called the University at Lewisburg, Bucknell was renamed for its benefactor, William Bucknell, a Philadelphian whose generosity bolstered the university during the post-Civil War depression. It began as a liberal arts school, but before the century was out, it was listing engineering and business courses in our curriculum. Today, it offers a strong liberal arts program, with 80 percent of all students enrolled in the College of Arts and Sciences, and the remainder in the College of Engineering. Besides engineering, it offers professional programs in management, education, and music. It encourages interdisciplinary programs, such as those in animal behavior, environmental studies, and Latin American studies. Students work closely with faculty, and many assist professors with special undergraduate research projects. Primarily an undergraduate institution, Bucknell enrolls about 3,550 highly selected scholars (3,350 undergraduates and 200 graduate students), who benefit from the wide curricular choices of a comprehensive university and the personal attention they receive from more than 270 faculty members committed to teaching. I added this resource because it does contain historical documents about Union County and Lewisburg. >Danielle McCormick, Program Director >Nonprofit Assistance Center >SEDA Council of Governments >RR 1 Box 372 >Lewisburg, PA 17837 > >570-522-7216 phone >570-524-9190 fax > >email:dmccormi@seda-cog.org -----Original Message----- From: LWA101@aol.com [SMTP:LWA101@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2000 12:00 AM To: PAUNION-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [PAUNION] Bucknell question I notice on the Union County website, there's a link to Bertrand Library at Bucknell. But when I go there, I have no idea what to click on next. Can someone give me an idea what genealogical records might be a Bucknell? Also, did that school exist in the 1860s, and what kind of school was it back then? Thanks so much. Laura Alderson, Raleigh, NC
