    1. [PAUNION] OBITUARIES FOR CENTRE COUNTY & UNION COUNTY, PENNSYLVANIA
    2. Sue Renkert
    3. Does anyone have access to newspaper records or obituaries for the Hartley Township (Union County) area for 1937? Sarah Clay Fees died June 15, 1937. Perhaps an obituary would shed some light on the following questions. I would also be interested in a possible obituary for Hiram Brilhart who died October 23, 1890 in Hartley Township, Union County, and for Peter Brilhart who was born 1822-3 and lived in Milesburg, Centre County in 1850 and in Hartley Township, Union County in the 1870s. I do not know his date of death. Also his wife Mary Brilhart, date of death unknown. She was about 11 years younger born 1811-1812. My great-grandmother, Sarah Clay Fees, was born around 1837, married Hiram Brilhart (of Centre County, PA), lived in Union County, PA (in Hartley Township, about halfway between Laurelton and Gleniron) at the time of my grandfathers birth in 1875, and died there about June 15, 1917. She is buried there. The Fees spelling is from her tombstone. I have wondered about the Clay name. Since she was six years older than my grandfather, I realized she may have been previously married, and Fees might have been her first married name. However, I had no luck locating Clays in the area. (Of course, I had a hard time locating Hiram Brilhart, too. It seems the area he lived in Centre County was pretty-much a backwoods community!) Initially, I identified David Feese (1800-1876) and his wife Sarah Adams Feese (1810-1881) as possible parents of Sarah. They lived in Hartley Township, and the ages were about right. But no proof. Then, looking at the Fies Tree drawing, I noticed that George Fies had a daughter named Sarah who was born in 1836. This seemed like a more likely match. But, again, no proof. Just a hopeful guess. (Gee, and I had developed such an attachment to poor old widowed George, showing up in the census in his old age in a rooming house.) Yesterday I came across the following reply to one of my postings: I have John Christian Clay married to a Mary Barbara Hoy in 1815 in Centre County, PA. Children include George, Sarah (b. 1837), William, John, Peggy, Alfred, Sydney, Mary Barbara, Jeremiah, Hiram, Daniel Reuben, Henry Adam, Margaret Christina, Rebecca Magdalena, Levi and Elizabeth (1821-1912). Wow! 16 kids!!!!! But, even more surprising, here was the Sarah Clay I hadnt been able to find. And even born in 1837!!!!! And in the same county where great-grandpa Hiram lived. I wonder if you folks would be willing to help me out by checking your records and databases for a possible first marriage for Sarah Clay? It would have been to a Fees (or Feese, Fies) in the Centre County-Union County area, and within the right timeframe: She was born ca 1837 and was married to Hiram Brilhart by 1875. Does anyone know of a male Fees in this area who died young? Or who may have been divorced? Or even a male Fees in this area and of the correct age where nothing is known about their marriages or death? Does anyone have Feeses in Centre County, PA? I wish my files were in order, but, unfortunately, they are not. (Thats my next big project.) I certainly would appreciate any help you all can give me on this! This lady has had me frustrated for almost thirty years! Thanks so much for all the help! Sue Renkert Fairbanks, Alaska __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
