Sherry, The" Civil War Lady" is very helpful. This is her web site. She will usually look up a soldier's name for free and tell you about the Unit he served. http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/7056/
I have recently found information saying that John SWARTZLANDER served 2 terms in the Civil War. He enlisted early at Easton, Penn, and then re-enlisted again on 22 Feb 1865 at Indiana, Penn. Is that where Union / Snyder County men had to go to join, and how do I go about finding information on these Units, so that I can send for his records? Any help will be appreciated, Sherry Morell Shelts sshelts@absolute-net.com

Is there anyone out there willing to look at the 1880 Union Co. PA census (probably for White Deer PA) for Benjamin F. SMITH? According to his Dec. 1881 marriage notice, he was living in White Deer at the time. He was born ca 1859, so I'm hoping that he was still living with his parents until he married. I appreciate any help you can give. Vickie Elam White

To the person who inquired about Milesville (I think), Pennsylvania: My great-grandfather, Hiram W. Brilhart was living in MilesBURG, Centre County, Pennsylvania, at the time of the 1850 census, along with his parents, Peter & Mary Brilhart. The census-taker made a notation that there were 87 dwellings in Milesburg, and no roads in the area, only paths from one house to another! Thanks to all who have responded to my query. I am overwhelmed! I guess I'd better go to the library and look at those old German newspapers again and see if I can find some articles to copy and try out all the ideas, volunteers and websites. You are a great bunch of people. Thanks again! Lisa Hello Listers, I had a crazy idea some time ago. I've been trying to tear down a brick wall and it occured to me that I might get a clue from newspaper articles, but with my luck, the information would be in one of the German language newspapers. This family spoke German up until my mother's generation. I thought I'd read through and copy all the articles with my family name and try to find someone to translate. Well, the type (font) they used was nearly impossible to read and it seems they capitalized every third word. I gave up in disgust. Does anyone out there know if anyone has tackled this task already? Is there a compilation of translated old German newspaper articles? Would anyone like to try? How about a high school or college German class? OK, I'll go sit quietly in my corner now. Terence Quinn's wife was possibly Mary Eckert. I read a story that she and her sister were separated during an Indian raid. The sister lived in another town and it was 30 some years before they found each other. Does anyone have information about this family, these two sisters, the story of any Quinn? This is one of my brick walls. Thanks for any help, pointers or suggestions. Margaret Crist Calvin, Vinton, Ohio

I would like to hear from anyone researching BENFER. Thank you. > > Phyllis Rickard ////////////////////////////////////////// Hello Phyllis, I have a Christina Benfer born 9/15/1777 in Penn Twp., then Northumberland Co., now Snyder Co. Pa. (Union Co. was taken from Northumberland Co. in 1813, and Snyder Co. was taken from Union Co. in 1855.) I do not have the parents or siblings of Christina Benfer. I show that Christina married Peter Braus of Northampton Co. and they lived and died in Liverpool, Perry Co., Pa., but I don't suppose this will help you. If you think your Benfer woman might be a sister or otherwise closely related to my Christina, you probably should be searching in the civil records of Northumberland Co. for the 1790s, particularly in the will files. Concerning church records, the surname BENFER in that region was German, so you probably should seek Lutheran or German Reformed church records of that period and location. Penn Twp. surrounds the town of Selinsgrove, where the oldest Lutheran church is Sharon Lutheran Church, 120 S. Market St., PA 17870. The phone number in 1988 was 717-374-8444, but realignment of area code numbers in Pennsylvania a few years ago might have changed that. Good luck, Nelson R. Sulouff Arizona

Hi, I'm interested in Samuel Fisher (1827-1901) of New Columbia, White Deer Twp, Union Co, PA. He is said to have been born there, but I have been unable to prove it. He is definitely there from 1850 to 1901. His parents might be George (b. c1790) and Elizabeth (b. c1795), but proof of that is also lacking. They are likely descended from the clan in early White Deer Twp, but exactly how is unclear. Any help appreciated. Tom Young <teyoung@i1.net>
