There is a Thomas Hartley age 36, Sarah-35, Eliza 9, John 6, and Mary 1, living in Centre Twp., Union County. Does anyone know anything about this family? I'm hoping that this is my John Hartley's family. He was born in Centre, PA about 1842. Any help greatly appreciated. Linda

Linda, There are seven counties in PA that have townships named Center, but Union is not one of them. Snyder Co., which was taken off of Union Co. in 1855, has a Center Twp., but that area came from portions of Penn and Beaver Townships. I do not think Union Co. ever had a Center Twp. Since you have the old English spelling Centre, it is most likely your "Centre, PA" refers to Centre County, which lies in the center of the state and has Bellefonte as its county seat. I realize this enlarges the area for your research, but at least I think it puts you in the right area of PA for your research. Since he married a girl from Mifflin Co. and Mifflin Co. adjoins Centre Co. on the southeast, I would suggest you begin looking in the southeast quadrant of Centre Co. for your Hartley family. With "three little ones" left at home when John died in Andersonville Prison, I question your remark that John "promptly died" there after his marriage! I think you should look for a marriage date at least a couple of years prior to 1860, which suggests John may have been born earlier than 1842. Hello list, Seeking information on descendants of ELMER BOOP whom is shown as a member of the Swengel band at the bottom of page 43,in Union County Pennsylvania, A bicentenial History by Charles M Snyder, copyright 1976. It is beleived that Elmer was a brother to Katheryn Boop whom married Samuel Keister. I'm working with an old letter from my gggg-uncle, Jabez HUNTER BOWER, to his brother. The letter is dated 25 Feb 1867. Jabez is staying at a boarding house at Sugar Valley Mountain and working at a Shingle Mill. Can anyone tell me the location of Sugar Valley Mountain? In a later letter, dated 24 Mar 1873, Jabez's son, George BOWER, is writing to his uncle telling him how his father, Jabez HUNTER BOWER, died. The death took place on Sugar Valley Mountain and burial was at Washington Presby Cem as the roads were too bad to Collomsville. Jabez was "putting fire in the engine" at the Shingle Mill. The men wanted to stop the engine to "file", so when they went to tell Jabez, they noticed that he had suddenly taken deathly ill. He died less than 24 hours later at the boarding house. I'm hoping someone can answer some of the questions below: Did these mills use steam power and was "putting fire" to an engine firing the boiler? What did it mean to stop the engine to file? The letter was written at Uniontown? I don't see anything by that name on the map in that general area. One last question for an old-time equipment buff. This sentence is in another letter from this same time period, written by Moses BOWER in Hepburn Township. "David STAIGER with others was sawing wood with a horse power machine and the balance wheel bursted and killed him." I can't imagine what kind of a machine a horse would power that would have a balance wheel like that. In the letter, "horse power" is not written together like it would be when you describe the power of an engine, for example. Would they have had those one-cylinder engines with the large balance wheel at this time and would they have called it a horse power machine? Thanks for your help. Logan, I do not know Rev. Kieffer's affiliation. His parents were Rev. Ephraim & Eleanor (Spangler) Kieffer. He had a brother, John B. Kieffer, who was a professor of ancient languages at Franklin & Marshall College. He had another brother, Rev. J. Spangler Kieffer D.D., and a half-brother, Rev. W.T.L. Kieffer, D.D.
