    1. New Columbia & Whitedeer lookup request
    2. Hi there, listers. I'm "hot on the trail" of my ancestor and wonder if some wonderful volunteer out there could help me? Does anyone have acess to census/birth/death/marriage records for these two places? Or a history book for around the 1860s-1870s? The info I have is: Charles F. Diffenderfer of New Columbia, PA, married Matilda Moore Gray of Mansfield at St. James Church, Mansfield, Sept. 25, 1873. I believe Charles (aka "Clifford" or "C.F.") was a school teacher. In 1875, he was principal of Berwick Academy, Columbia County. Believe he was born in Union County, PA, abt. 1839-1843. I'd surely like to find out who his parents were, etc. Any help greatly appreciated. Best regards, Laura Alderson, Raleigh, NC

    1. C. F. DIFFENDERFER, Columbia County, PA 1875
    2. Just wanted to update you (it's sleeting out, good weather for web surfing). I found out that C.F. Diffenderfer was the principal of Berwick Academy in Columbia County in 1875. This is the first document I've found in Pennsylvania for my elusive ancestor. (History of Columbia and Montour Counties, PA, ed. J. H. Battle, 1887). I'm so delighted.... So, listers...did he marry one of his students, perhaps?????? Does anyone have access to the 1860 or 1870 censuses for Union County? Anyone know of any Diffenderfers who moved to surrounding counties in the 1850s, 1860s, 1870s? Or any schools I should check, either for Clifford's education, or for teachers employed during the time? Clifford's dates: b. bet. 1839-1843, probably Union County, PA Married 1873, Mansfield, Tioga County, PA, Matilda M. GRAY. Thanks in advance for your trouble. Best regards, Laura Alderson, Raleigh, NC

    1. 1860 and 1870 censuses
    2. Hi, listers. I looked on the US GenWeb project site, and found that almost none of the PA 1860 and 1870 censuses are being transcribed. True? If so, does anyone have the real census sheets that they can lend me? The site for volunteer transcribers says they can't provide the sheets, it's too expensive. Does anyone know if these censuses have been transcribed and are online elsewhere? Thanks for your time. Best regards, Laura Alderson, Raleigh, NC, LWA101@aol.com

    2. Dear Listers: I am unsubscribing temporarily, to have time to catch up on my email. Rest assured that if you are waiting on a reply from me, I will get to it very soon. Listmaster: What is the appropriate site for List and/or Digest message Archives? I don't want to lose track, simply because I need time to get better organized.
