Hi, listers. I need some more Civil War advice. First, is there, anywhere, one list of all the regiments that were raised in Union County? Would a fellow from Lewisburg be likely to have gone over the Columbia County to enlist? I know they went everywhere, but would like to set some priorities. Also, would they have drafted all the boys in PA for the war, or would some of them have stayed home? My boy was one of 14 children, so I doubt that he'd have been only son of a widowed mother or anything like that that would have excluded him. Now, another question. I am trying to figure out what happened to my great grandfather, C. F. Diffenderfer, between the years of 1850 and 1872. The obvious answer is the War. He was born abt. 1840-43 in Union County. I have who I think is him in the 1850 census, but next I pick up his trail is 1872 in Tioga County. He would have been 20 in 1860 and 30 in 1870, and I know I've got to check the censuses for that. But that probably won't tell me who his parents were, which is what I need to confirm. Is there an 1865 census for Union County? What kind of other records should I look for? Many thanks in advance for your time. Laura Alderson, Raleigh, NC LWA101@aol.com
Hi, I recently learned that my ancestors first settled in Union County, PA from family history article about the descendents of Henry McCoy who was born in 1751 in Hillsbourgh,Orange County,NC and died in Clarke County,GA in 1809. It said " McCoys first settled in Union County, PA. They later migrated to VA, NC, SC then GA" Im curious to know when McCoys first came to PA and who was the first came to Union County, PA. Comments are welcome. Best Regards, Suzy McCoy szybar@aol.com
Dear listers, I'm still trying to tumble that ol' brick wall....... I'm trying to find proof of the parentage of Henry D. Aurand (b. 06/03/1813 d. 09/01/1878) who lived and died in Shamokin Dam, PA. He married Esther (Hettie/Hester) Gaugler (b. 05/11/1812 d.11/16/1865). Esther's parents were George and Hannah (Hummel) Gaugler. Henry & Esther had the following children: George M. born about 1833 (later married Violetta Gemberling) Henry J. 10/1834 (later married Mariah Hoffman) Emilia(Amelia) 08/1837 (later married Isaac Frymire) Elizabeth 02/1840 (not sure who she married) Catharine A. 1943 (later married Samuel or John Hartman) Sarah A. 04/1845 (later married Isaac Fetter) John Hummel 1848 (not sure who he married William 1851 (later married Savilla Fetter) Jonas 1854 (later married Kathryn Anderson) Clara (Alice) 1859 (later married Calvin N. Rutter) Does anyone have anything in their family records that can help me? Any old family bibles with a note scribbled in them? Thanks to all...........Lisa Betts betts@sprintmail.com

Laura, I sent for the pension records of my ggrandfather who served in the Civil War from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. in late 1998. It cost $10 and I waited 10 weeks for the information. Definitely worth the money and the wait. The web site for NARA is: http://www.nara.gov/genealogy/civilwar.html I've cut and pasted the following information from that website for you. I would definitely visit the site however for more information on the holdings and microfilms available. To obtain Civil War military service and pension records by mail Paper copies of Civil War military service and pension records can be ordered by mail using one NATF Form 80 for each soldier and each type of file. You can obtain the NATF Form 80 by providing your name and mailing address to inquire@nara.gov. Be sure to specify "Form 80" and the number of forms you need. You can also obtain the NATF Form 80 by writing to: National Archives and Records Administration, Attn: NWDT1, 700 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington, DC 20408-0001. Laura, I have ordered records from the National Archives. As I recall, it took five or six weeks but I could be wrong. Go to the Nat. A's website and get the instructions. It costs ten dollars but is very much worth the price. They sent me volumes of stuff. Barb
