    3. Since the list has been slow I thought I would post a couple of questions.I recently purchaed a copy of the Union County Heritage (1996 vol. XV) published by the Union County Historical Society. In this issue there are a couple of references to a school house which was sold to the Evangical Association (around 1866).It also says that this schoolhouse was on the turnpike west of John Diehl's.I believe this John Diehl was my gg grandfather.I know that he lived in that area but have not been able to figure out exactly where.John and his wife ( Mary Laird ) are buried at Forest Hill. There is also a reference to soe Property on the turnpike owned by the Reish family.I know that John's sister Elizabeth married Daniel Reish jr. and that one of John's daughters -Sarah- married John Miller.I have a copy of a picture of Sarah and John and their family. It says on the back that their farm was the first farm past Forest Hill on the right hand side headed towards half way dam.My questions are as follows: Does anyone where the school was/is ? Does anyone know where the Miller farm was/is ? Does anyone have info. on any of these families? Does anyone have any old copies of the Heritage that mention the Diehl family ? I sent a letter to the Historical Society. They said they will do an Hours worth of research for 25 dollars.Has anyone had this done and is it worth it? Sorry for the long letter but since the list has been slow mabye we can get some talk started.MERRY CHRISTMAS to everyone. Michael B. Diehl

    3. Charlie, You might try the U.S. Military Records at Carlisle, Pa. They have been very helpful to me. During a crash in June, I lost that file with all their information but they have a lot. Also, the Carlisle Historical Society was very helpful. GOOD LUCK! 3. I am looking for anything about the 34th Pennsylvania Reserve Regiment (also known as the 5th Reserves). Several companies were recruited in the area. I have found some regimental history information and some brief mention of the regiment at Antietam and 2nd Bull Run, but not much else. I know that one company was recruited from Snyder County and two were recruited from Northumberland County and I have their muster lists. However, two companies were recruited from Union County and I haven't been able to find any information about them. If anyone can tell me where I can get a copy of the muster lists and any history of the Companies, I would appreciate it. My great, great grandfather (Charles Moyer) was in Company D of the regiment and I am trying to trace that side of my family. I think he was from the Sunbury or Selinsgrove area and I don't know why he would have joined a Union County unit unless he was actually living in the county at the time. Any information would be appreciated. Thanks, Charlie Kalb

    1. BOAL (BOLE)
    2. Joyce Lund
    3. Hello! Greetings from the beautiful Pacific Northwest! I'm "new around here" and as is everyone else, seeking that elusive ancestor who has haunted me for years with his disappearing act! The following is all I have: DAVID BOAL (BOLE) B: 1739 Lancaster Co., (now Perry Co.) M: Susanna Thomson in 1769 (she was born in Scotland to John Thomson of Thompsontown), 7 children, Sarah, John, Nancy, Elizabeth, Thomas, William, Jane. David D: 11 Aug 1814 at age 75 Bur: Old Lock Cemetery, Thompsontown, (now Juniata Co.,) Pa. Served in several capacities in the Rev. War. In a trip to Carlisle in 1994, found in the 3rd and 5th Series, Pennsylvania Archives, Vols. 6 & 23 the following: Captain John Hamilton's Company, Company of Cumberland County Militia Commanded by Colonel Arthur Buchanan, in service for 2 months and 2 days from 20th Jan to 30th Mar 1778, PRIVATE DAVID BOLE. Muster Rol of CAPTAIN DAVID BOLE'S Company,m Second Company, Seventh Battalion of Cumberland Co., Militia, Commanded by Col. Purdy, May 1780. (Also lists other surnames of mine: PFOUTS, WILT, CARGILL, REED) Marching Roll of Captain George Heay's Company of the seventh Battalion, Class Third, 1780 CAPTAIN BOLE'S COMPANY. CAPTAIN DAVID BOAL'S (spelling change) PAY ROLL FROM JUNE 22ND TO AUG 29TH, 1782 INCLUDING FOUR DAYS FOR MARCHING HOME IS 2 MONTHS, 7 DAYS. Return of the Marched Men of Captain Hugh McAlister's Company of the Second Class of the Seventh Battalion of Cumberland Co., Militia, commanded by Col James Purdy, Aug. 24 1782 CAPTAIN DAVID BOAL'S COMPANY Mifflin Co., was formed in 1789 from Cumberland & Northumberland Counties. Here we find an Agnes BOAL married to John Foster Wilson, both born about 1800. of their children there is a DAVID BOAL, CAPTAIN IN THE UNITED STATES ARMY at Fort Missoula, Mont. Later, it is noted that a CAPT. JOHN BOAL was killed March 16 1865 at Averysboro, N.C. 5 years after the death of my DAVID BOAL. This information has been found in the HUNTINGDON, MIFFLIN, JUNIATA AND PERRY COUNTIES text. That's it. During my 1994 trip, I scoured Boalsburg with a fine-tooth comb and found no connection to my David. I KNOW there is one but haven't yet found it. In the brochure on the Boal Mansion it states: one DAVID BOAL EMIGRATED FROM NORTHERN IRELAND TO THE NORTH AMERICAN COLONIES, SERVED IN THE REVOLUTIONARY WAR AND EVENTUALLY SETTLED ON A TRACT OF LAND IN PA. IN WHAT IS NOW CENTRE COUNTY. IN 1789 HE HAD A SMALL STONE DWELLING CONSTRUCTED FOR HIM. His son, David, built an extensive addition to his father's house in 1798 became a citizen of local note, and was honored posthumously when the village nearby was named BOALSBURG. Have written for Pension and war records for Capt. David Boal (Bole) and was told none existed. Now what? HELP!!!!! Joyce

    1. CARTER
    2. Barbara Blossom
    3. Is anyone researching CARTERs or have any information on them? Elizabeth's death was reported in a one-line obit in the "Union Weekly Whig". She died in Milton in Dec. 1851 at age 64. Would like to find her grave. Her husband, Christian, died earlier, possibly 1829 and possibly someplace else. George Shoemaker also died in Milton in 1851. He may have been her brother. Four of her sons were named Daniel (buried in Elimsport Cemetery), Christian (same), Willam and Edward. Edward married Ann Eliza Miller at White Deer Church, also in 1851. They lived in Jersey Shore after their marriage. I'd love to have more info on these people. BabaraB

    3. I would appreciate a posting describing the availability of land records, will indexes & wills, and marriage records for Union County and in particular Union Township for the period 1800-1850 (I know that part of the early time frame this was Northumberland Co). Is there a listing of cemeteries and/or records of burials for Union Township covering the same time frame? Thanks in advance, Jim Cleveland, OH

    3. Hi, I thought I already posted this but I didn't see it so here we go again. Does anyone know how or where I can get info on who is buried in the Alvira Cemetery (in White Deer Valley) that was moved to Allenwood during WWII? There is a strong possibility that my g-g-grandmother, Elizabeth Carter, was buried there in 1851. Thanks, Barbara B.

    3. Cynthia, I don't have the Donna Irish book, but I do have "Rhineland Emigrants" by Don Yoder. He has a section on "The Old Goschenhoppen Lutheran Burial Registers 1752-1772" in which he mentions that a Michael BAUMAN, widower, reformed, born 1699 died July 26, 1756 and was buried on "Johannes ZIEBER's place" on July 27, 1756. This is a record from the Perkiomen area of Montgomery Co., PA. Good luck, Ann Rickard, SC

    2. Ann Rickard
    3. Hi, I've been on several of these Rootsweb Lists for a while, yet cannot recall having seen mention of the popular "Irish book", that being "Pennsylvania - German Marriages" by Donna Irish. Here are some STUTZMAN listings from her book: Adam STUTZMAN - Barbara SCHMIDT married 2/28/1809 in Trinity Tulpehocken Reformed Church, Jackson twp., Lebanon Co. (my note: This was the son of Christian STUTZMAN and wife Elisabeth, christened at Himmel's (Schwaben Creek) Church, Northumberland Co. 1787. Adam HEDERICK and wife were sponsors. Adan STUTZMAN moved to Perry Co. in 1812 and was a lifelong farmer there.) Susannah STUTZMAN - Abraham SCHWARTZ married 6/16/1803 in Tabor 1st Reformed Church, Lebanon Co. by Rev. Wm. HEISTER with Christian STUTZMAN as witness. (my note: This is the same Abraham SCHWARTZ for whom Christian STUTZMAN was a sponsor at Abraham's baptism in Klinger's Church, Dauphin Co.) Daniel STUTZMAN - Elizabeth SCHARCK married 9/25/1836 in Trinity Tulpehocken Church. (my note: This is the son of Godfrey and Christina STUTZMAN, born 1815 at ? and christened by John C. STOEVER, Jr. He and Elizabeth lived years later in Milton, Northumberland Co., PA where the family were boatmen. Trinity Tulpehocken records also show their daughter, Rebecca, b. 12/4/1840 with Sarah STUTZMAN as sponsor at baptism and their son, Adam Daniel, born 3/26/1843 with sponsors Peter ECKERT and Salome. Catherine Eckert married Christian STUTZMAN, Jr.) Elizabeth STUTZMAN - John HAACK married 2/1/1801 at Trinity Tulpehocken. Fiana STUTZMAN - Jonathan ARTZ married 10/28/1848 at Trinity Tulpehocken. Harriet STUTZMAN - Samuel WIMMER married 3/3/1861 at Trinity Tulpehocken. Jonathan STUTZMAN - Lydia STRICKLER married at Trinity Tulpehocken. (My note: This is a correction!!! of the "Irish" book. By the church records of UCC Lancaster Archives microfilm reel!!! The Irish book lists Jonathan as marrying Magdalena GLANTZ 10/7/1827 which is combining parts of two lines in the church record.) Lydia STUTZMAN - Jonathan WAITER married 11/11/1832 in Tabor 1st Reformed in Lebanon Co. (My note: This is probably daughter of Godfrey and Christina STUTZMAN, born in York Co. 1812). Peter STUTZMAN - Elizabeth ARTZ married 6/1/1807 in Trinity Tulpehocken. (My note: This is the son of Christian, Jr. and father of William A. STUTZMAN of Schuylkill Co.). Hope this helps other PA-German and STUTZMAN researchers! Ann Rickard, SC
