Samuel Patterson was my great-grandfather; presumably born in Ireland about 1820, married Eliza McGruther/Magruder also from Ireland. The family lived in or around Stratford, ON, (perhaps in Middlesex Co. for a time) and little is known about them until Samuel's untimely death in 1859, the result of a bar fight at Mrs. Kelly's tavern in Stratford. Eliza and 6 of their 7 children appear in the 1861 census of Stratford Town. By 1871 the family had disappeared from the area, indicating the probable death of Eliza about 1868-69. The Patterson children were: William R. (~1846); then my grandfather, John (~1847) who lived most of his life in Collingwood, ON; Sarah (~1849); Robert (~1854); Samuel/Sandy (~1856) and Mary Ann (~1858).
