    3. Biography found in "History of Nicholas County West Virginia" by William Griffee Brown and published in 1954. PATTERSON, English. Henry Patterson came from Virginia about 1850, married Mary Ann McVey, and in 1855 Henry O. Middleton conveyed to Henry Patterson and Mary Ann Patterson a tract of 220 acres of land on the north side of Gauley River opposite the mouth of Meadow River. On this land Henry Patterson located and cleared out his farm. His sons were, W.H. Patterson, Augustus Patterson, John B. Patterson, Leonidas C. Patterson, Milton Patterson and Alexander M. Patterson. W.H. Patterson and Augustus Patterson occupied the home place on the south side of Gauley River at the ferry, improved the Carnefix mill property and operated the ferry over Gauley River. W.H. Patterson married Ritta Walker, daughter of Marion Walker; Augustus Patterson married May Groves, daughter of David R. Groves; Leonidas Patterson married Lola Groves, daughter of John D. Groves and located at Mount Hope in Fayette County. He wrote his name Patteson in his business there. His son, Okey L. Patteson! , was governor of the State from 1949 to 1953. Alex M. Patterson married Vergie Groves and moved to Fayette County. The Battle of Carnefix Ferry was fought on the Henry Patterson farm. In 1935 the State purchased the portion of the farm on which this battle occurred, and by act of the Legislature established Carnefix Battlefield Park.
