Lee Patterson Mills Washington County Pennsylvania Oakland March 17th 1861 Friend William I received your letter a week ago and take this opportunity of answering it. I am afraid that there will be but few of my old acquaintances left around the Point again I get back. You say that they they are all getting married and leaveing. I dont think that I will leave this state for three or four years. It suits me better than any part that I have been in. At least this portion of the state the climate is more uniform We have neither the extreme of heat nor cold. I don't believe that it is as warm here in the summer as it is in Pa. The nights are always cool. The winters are very pleasant. You dont need gloves and you cant work with your coat on. Ice formed but twice this winter and that was not thicker than common window glass and there was not a day but what there was roses in bloom out in the yard. Strawberrys will be ripe in about a week. Moses Patterson is in the Army he joined about a year ago he is getting along fine he got an appointment of Clerk in the Quarter Masters office at Fort Umpqua Oregon where they are at present stationed writeing a couple hours a day is about all he has to do he gets pretty good wages they were out on the plains las summer escorting emigrant trains. enclosed your will find a power of attorney authorising you to colect the money you spoke of you say that part of it is ready and the remainder will be in July(?) when it is all ready I would like if you would send it to me you can get a draft on Wells Fargo & Co. they will give you two one a duplicate you can send them at different times and I can draw the money with the first one that comes but if not conveniant to do so you can send it as you may think proper and dont forget to deduct enough to repay you for all your troubles and expense Give my respects to Caroline and all the rest of the folks.
