Here are Dodd/Patterson marriages from Burleson County through 1871. I'm going county by county looking again for Dodd and Patterson marriage in light of the "Widow Sisters-in-Law". we are searching for two women of all most the same name, who married men of the same name-almost: James M.DODD married Malissa E.or C. Patterson in san augustine co. 1860 and James M or H or B PATTERSON married Marcella DODD in san augustine co in a double ceremony on the same day in sept in 1860 as the other two. Both men(BROTHERS IN LAW) are presumed dead in the war at an army post in Rondo, Ark. But, we have NOT found the two widows? The below marriages are some of the same names in the same places that others int he DODD and PATTERSON familys had married? T. C. DODD to Celia Ann THOMPSON on Feb. 29, 1866 ~ pg. 176 J. A. W. PATTERSON to Ellenor L. DAWSON on Apr. 07, 1867 ~ pg. 233 Andrew M. THOMPSON to Marth E. Seek info on Elsira (Magers) Patterson, widow of William Patterson. They married in Edmonson Co., KY, about 1850 and moved to Illinois, Warren Co. In January 1862, William was killed there in a saw mill explosion, leaving Elsira with three small children and another on the way. About 1863-64, she moved back to Edmonson Co., KY, to live near sister, taking her children with her. Had daughter Eliza J., son George, etc. Does anyone know anything about this person? Wes - > This question is for anyone who has done research on the Robert > Patterson family of Craven/York Co., SC (ca. 1727-1791). Have any of you > ever heard of the late Leonardo Andrea and the research that he did in > the 1940s and '50s? A description of this research by Andrea can be found in "The Patterson and Pattison Family Association Newsletters" by Norman G. Patterson that were published in the 1960's. There are 4 volumes and they also have been put on microfiche. The microfiche copies have some indexes that were not in the bound copies I saw. A the Sutro Library, the microfiche call number was G3 1641. My Pattersons were in York Co. PA and Harford Co. MD about 1750 to 1800, but I cannot connect them to any of the people mentioned by Andrea (or any one else). It is my understanding that people could move freely between Great Britain and America. No immigration records were necessary because it was all owned by England. Several years ago I went through a number of Filby's "Passenger and Immigration List Index" books and copied all of the Patterson citations. Before 1800, he lists over 400 Patterson citations which condense into 160 unique families because they have the same given names, arrival year and destinations. There are 23 in the years between 1720 and 1739. My conclusion is that Patterson was a common name in Colonial America and many more families arrived here than those mentioned by Andrea. Hope this helps, and good luck on your search. John _______________ John Patterson Lindley johnlindley@compuserve.com or johnlindley@tcsn.net

Message text written by INTERNET:PATTERSON-L@rootsweb.com >I'll forward the emails to you, Jim. If anyone else wants to see them as well, just let me know.< Hi Wes. My wife tentatively has a John Patterson ancestor b. ca 1767 SC according to undocumented data I have gotten from World Family Tree CD's. According to them, he had a son John Patterson (b. GA--ca 1815) who married a Mary Jackson. I would be interested in reviewing the e-mails you mentioned to see if I can get a better tie-in to that data for my younger John. Thanks, Chuck & Letha Patterson Kimball.
Jim, No, the 1840 census will not give birthplaces. However!!!! I just found something this past week I've never seen before. John's (John Patterson, born circa 1767 and married Margaret Black of SC) daughter Amey Jane Patterson Kincaid was listed in the 1880 census in Fannin Co., Ga. She was about the only child of John and Margaret's that was still living in 1880, that I know of. IT SAYS HER MOTHER AND FATHER WERE BOTH BORN IN SOUTH CAROLINA. That is the first clue that I've ever seen in any public document that said where John Patterson (b. ca. 1767) was born. Now, I know that some census documents have errors in them, but you have to start somewhere, and this is a BIG find for me. I'm sure someone else along the way has seen it before, but I had not. So, based on that, I am even more convinced that there is a tie between our John Patterson and the ROBERT PATTERSON that died in York Co., SC (the old Craven County, SC) in 1791. I BELIEVE THAT THIS OLDER ROBERT PATTERSON WAS THE GRANDFATHER OF OUR JOHN PATTERSON. Let me send you some of the emails that cropped up on a "new" email list called Patterson Genealogy NC that is for Pattersons of the SC, NC, Ga region. These emails gave quite a description of this older Robert Patterson who lived from about 1727 to 1791. His wife was named Sarah, and they had at least 7 children (4 sons and 3 daughters). There may have been more than one grandson named John, so we have to be careful trying to determine who John's father was. But we DO know that the oldest son of Robert was named Thomas, born ca 1748, who had a son named John Patterson, who was born in SC about 1766. Ring any bells????? I'll forward the emails to you, Jim. If anyone else wants to see them as well, just let me know. Thanks.
