    1. [PATTERSON] Searching for Descendants of Samuel and Eliza Patterson of Stratford, ON, circa 1860
    2. The Pattersons
    3. Samuel Patterson was my great-grandfather; presumably born in Ireland about 1820, married Eliza McGruther/Magruder also from Ireland. The family lived in or around Stratford, ON, (perhaps in Middlesex Co. for a time) and little is known about them until Samuel's untimely death in 1859, the result of a bar fight at Mrs. Kelly's tavern in Stratford. Eliza and 6 of their 7 children appear in the 1861 census of Stratford Town. By 1871 the family had disappeared from the area, indicating the probable death of Eliza about 1868-69. The Patterson children were: William R. (~1846); then my grandfather, John (~1847) who lived most of his life in Collingwood, ON; Sarah (~1849); Robert (~1854); Samuel/Sandy (~1856) and Mary Ann (~1858). Looking for connections to this family and willing to share information. John Patterson Pointe Claire, QC jpattersons@sprint.ca

    1. [PATTERSON] Origin of Name Churchill
    2. Jerry K. Patterson
    3. John Churchill (1650-1722), 1st Duke of Marlborough, was an English general considered one of the greatest military commanders in history. He served under many English monarchs with the last being Queen Anne. You can look up Queen Anne on the following BBC Radio Internet Site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/state/monarchs_leaders/anne.shtml Sir Winston Churchill is a direct descendant of John Churchill. Winston Churchill was Prime Minister of Great Britain during World War II. Many people consider him to be the greatest person of the 20th Century because he saved the civilized world from tyranny. You can read about him on the BBC Radio Internet Site: http://www.bbc.co.uk/history/state/monarchs_leaders/churchill.shtml Jerry Patterson

    2. Rosalind Paterson
    3. Hello List, I've just received a birth cert for a distant rellie; his name is George SAUNDERS, and he was born in 1880 in Blantyre, Lanarkshire, Scotland. His parents were James SAUNDERS, ironmonger's assistant, and his wife Margaret, maiden name PATERSON. James and Margaret were married in 1878 in Kirknewton, Midlothian. By 1881, Margaret and little George were back at her parents' household in Uphall, West Lothian; I have no idea where James was, but he wasn't in Blantyre. Is anyone else interested in this family ? Cheers, Rosalind Paterson.

I would like to eventually track forward all the kids which include at least 1 set of twins. The family lived variously in Barr, Perry and Loogootee, IN. 1. [PATTERSON] Pattersons in Scotland
    2. Jerry K. Patterson
    3. As I understand it, the name Patterson originated in Scotland (meaning son of Patrick). Some Pattersons immigrated to England then America, some directly to America, and some to Ireland and then to America (these later would be called Scot-Irish since they spent one or more generations in Ireland). I don't know which of these categories my Pattersons fit into since I have only been able to trace them back to my Grandfather's Grandfather in South Carolina. I am still looking for the missing link to get back any further. There are two Scottish clans that I know of which have Patterson Septs. A Sept in a Scottish clan is a family group considered part of the clan but does not have the clans' last name as their last name. They came either from a female line or a group which was adopted into the clan for mutual benefit. Jerry Patterson jerrykpatterson@home.com
