Patterson Settlement was on the Sabinal River six miles south of Sabinal in southeastern Uvalde County. It was founded by and named for G. W. Patterson, Sr., who brought his family homesteading from Alabama to Texas in 1847. The Patterson family arrived in the Sabinal Canyon in 1851 after a stay in East Texas. Shortly after arriving at the site Patterson preempted 160 acres and purchased additional, then built a rock house on the banks of the Sabinal River with the use of slave labor. John Leakey, who later founded Leakey, and A. B. Dillard, who helped found Leona Ditch, may have been among the original settlers of Patterson Settlement. A schoolhouse constructed in the late 1850s was also used for church services. Methodist minister H. G. Horton, who preached at the schoolhouse in 1858, recalled that all corners of the building were stacked with rifles and shotguns and that everyone attendingthe service came armed with pistols. The settlement was abandoned during the Civil War,qv when Indian depredations became more frequent. Many of those people who abandoned the community during the war returned soon after its conclusion. At a time when Uvalde was notorious for lawlessness, a young Uvaldean staying at Patterson Settlement in 1870 remembers that the community was peaceful except for the constant worry over Indian attacks. Patterson Settlement appears to have been abandoned shortly thereafter; no record of its continuation after 1870 is available. A historical plaque was placed at the original stone home of G. W. Patterson in 1965. The Brown Cemetery, probably named for either William A. Brown or Joseph G. Brown, who owned property at the Patterson Settlement site in 1915, was shown on maps of 1988. BIBLIOGRAPHY: A Proud Heritage: A History of Uvalde County (Uvalde,tx El Progreso Club, 1975).Ruben E. Ochoa Hi Judy All I know is that William B. Patterson married my ggg aunt Cassandra Arnold Sutherland in Montgomery Co. TX after her first husband, Walter Sutherland died. I don't know where he came from, but he was the Justice of the Peace in Montgomery Co. TX before the 1840's. He and Cassie and her family (and I don't know who else) left Montgomery/Grimes County area by about 1843, going to Medina Co. TX, wher William B. Patterson died of smallpox in 1848. Since your Pattersons came from St. Augustine Co., you might want to check out the Patterson Ferry that was on the Sabine River north of the Gaines Ferry back before the TX Revolution. I haven't been able to find out anything about it via the Net, but I saw it on an old map of Texas before 1836. It was close to the Gaines Ferry - I'd say within 30 miles just by looking at that map. I did inquire about it, and was told to check out the Patterson family that lived on the east side of the Sabine River In LA - I think the parish over there is Sabine also. I'm sorry I don't have more info for you, but perhaps the above will give you a clue. Joanne Hi Judy Can't remember if I replied or not. I don't have a lot on the Pattersons. Just know that Wm. B. Patterson married my ggg aunt Cassandra Arnold in Montgomery Co. ca 1838. The family went to Medina Co. where Wm. B., died in 1848 or 9 if smallpox. They had some kids, or at least one. . Cassie's brothers Hendrick and Holly Arnold and their grandmother got land grants in Bandera Co. after the Mexican War of 1846. I found an early map of TX on the Ancestry.com website, and it showed a Patterson Ferry on the Sabine River north of Gaines Ferry. The two ferries don't look like they are that far apart - I'd judge less than 20 miles if I had to call it. I inquired around and was told to check the Pattersons in Sabine Parish, LA which is directly opposite of Sabine and Shelby Cos. TX. I never did find out anything I wanted to know, but you might since your Pattersons were later, as were the ones I found out about from that area. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ ------- To: PATTERSON-L@rootsweb.com Hello everyone, I have a Francis Marion Patterson to add to the list. 1. [PATTERSON] san augustine co.tx. soldiers -where did their widows go?
    2. Milam co. Mailing list, you may ask why send san augustine co. data to milam list? ANSWER: because all the family that connected to these two boys and to one of the wives was iN MILAM CO. TX. moved to Texas, first to san augustine and then Milam and surrounding areas, Bandera, Burleson, Falls, Williamson, Leon, Sabine, from alabama before 1860 and died here in Milam co. tx.. ---------------- Anne, we have the documents to show that james n. patterson objected to the military having his name listed as james m. and it was changed by the clerk on the roll call record--at the bottom for comments. . WE have a copy of the clerks note on the roll call cardtelling of the objection and making the correction-however we do not know what the 'n' stands for?. We know the boys both died..we have the military documents showing their enlistment and their deaths and the dates and causes. We have the paymaster letters and the records given to the lawyer who came to collect the dead patterson boys, pay for his widow.(CSA) We know they married and the names they used, we have the marriage copies of records from clerk in san augustine, tex..1860--two marriages, same day, same year, same month...a double wedding of a sister and a bro to a brother and a sister. we have the census for 1850 for the dodd family and the patterson family...we do not know whay james n. was called by another name.?? we do know that the family researchers consider them the same boy. Multiple names were not uncommon, we have one girl called: Amelia Louisa jane dodd bowen..she married D.A. Bowen in milam , birthed a baby, died in the effort and the child was raised in milam and was in the household of her granny and uncle louis taylor dodd in bandera co. in 1880 and in milam by 1885. This same young woman who's momma died in childbed, married in milam co. to her first cousin, charles madison grabener and she also died in childbed. The little baby died also within two years. sadly. The mary bowen grabener and her son are buried and marked in the hurt graham cemetery in old sand grove...CAVE section of the cemetery in the CAVE family plots. Henry CAVE was brother to amelia bowens momma and her uncle. He was great grand uncle to the woman mary bowen grabener and permission to bury her and her little baby was most probably given by nancy BASS cave, wife of Henry CAVE. MY husband has a ggg granny with the name : Sarah elender carline pennyless angeline (PACK)taylor.(they called her "ellen") Married in tennessee-/dekalb co. in 1869 to james Andrew taylor....and they named a child TENNESSEE RACHAEL TAYLOR GULLETT. I checked with OKLA for a death certif for rachael gullett and no such animal???...I wrote for r.gullett???, I wrote for R.T. Gullett???, I wrote for mrs. joseph crockett gullett???, no such animal????, finally, I tried tennessee rachael taylor gullett and they sent it to me...ha..sorry, I just get on a roll.grin. WE do have the census showing the dodd patterson, son, child living with his grandparents patterson, in 1870 st. landrys parish, LA. --no matter why he is there??..he is just there. I do NOT h ave the marriage record of the rougeau marriage but have the family researchers tell me that they do have such.--I should try to get his out of rapides parish. The lady is on the census. ------- as a side note, there is a teacher married to a rougeau man in Louisiana who has a web site for her students. I found her on google.com search on that name. I wrote her and she said her husbands people were from Rapides parish and were still there. SHE was going to ask them some questions for me...I have NOT heard back from her. ------------- Some of this data on the patterson soldier and the dodd soldier we know for certain...we have the documents. there is a college in texas in austin who has an extensive library on confederate records..and we mailed a questionaire and they sent the records. also, the lists of the soldiers on the death lists and burial lists of camp rondo, ark, are on line. the government put up a marker on the common grave of the young men who died of disease, hundreds of them. ---so, what we say, we can prove. Our Questions--we guess at. we do NOT know what happened to the girls???..the widows??...and I DO think that patterson marcella is the patterson dodd girl??...but again using the patterson name in sabine.??..unless the patterson boy married a girl the same age and name as his sister? well, I am open for suggestions. I don't have the documents scanned..but can do so if you need them? Its been my experience that the scanned documents come out sorta grey..I probably don't know the equiptment.......any ideas on the widows? thanks to the good people of Milam, to the DODD family who still lives in that county,The Grabener Families, and the Patterson family of TX and Louisiana. sincerely, judy hugg grimes, yorba linda ca.

    1. [PATTERSON] Re: war widows Patterson/DODD-missing in action
    2. In a message dated 5/5/2002 3:25:16 PM Central Daylight Time, MEGBR549 writes: > . The two bridegrooms go 105 miles from san augustine co. tx to camp rondo, > arkansas and both of them die before they even get to war of measles and > flux. Buried together in arkansas. > I'm not altogether sure of this even.....I think we got ourselves confused on the initials. We are looking for (1) James B (W?) Patterson (b 1840) who married IN 1860 (2) Marcella DODD (b ?) and (3) James (I'm no longer sure but I think M) DODD (b ?) who married IN 1860 the(4) Malissa Caroline PATTERSON (b 1848) , sister to James Burton (W?) above. The 1850 SABINE CO CENSUS has these PATTERSON kids at home with their parents (6 & 7) Matilda Caroline and Plesent W "Peter" PATTERSON. The 1860 SAN AUGUSTINE Census (before the double wedding) has these kids still at home with their parents. I have yet to see the 1850 Census for James and Marcella DODD at home with their parents. I have NO records of (4) having the name "Elizabeth" at all. If you do, please tell me where. As far as I know we have none of these kids in the 1870 Census. The 6th company has the WRONG PATTTERSON! It has J M (or N) PATTERSON. Now the (2) Marcella Dodd & (1) James Burton (W?) PATTERSON had one son -- the little "stolen" boy -- (5)James M (or N) PATTERSON (b. 1862), who wasn't even born until the Civil War was underway. HE was with his PATTERSON GRANDPARENTS and apparently married in 1889 to ROUGEAU (not confirmed but seems to be the case). Widows are (4) Malisa Caroline Patterson DODD (Mrs. James M(?) & (2) Marcella Dodd PATTERSON (Mrs. James B (W?). Oral tradition tells us the men both died in the Civil War, as I understand it. 1. we do not know what happened to lucy marcella dodd patterson after mid, 1860's when she hired the lawyer to go get  her husbands pay? The widow's records we have are for (9) Lucy Marcella Dodd Patterson (Mrs. James N). I have to ask whether this is the right Marcella Dodd Patterson. I haven't seen her pension application papers to know if she is the right one or not. We need to look at AGAIN ---1850 Census & 1860 CENSUS where our (2) Marcella is home with her parents and get her name as it is recorded there and her DOB and her brother's accurate name & DOB. Check these records against the Civil War records. Then in the 1870 Census, we think (2) Marcella might have married again, as I understand it. Someone will have to remind me what name it was she was rumored to have remarried. Or am I wrong about who remarried? As far as I know, (4) Malisa Caroline Patterson DODD vanishes after 1860, presumably dead. However, she might have remarried and we just haven't found her. I would THINK a young widow might go live with her parents or in laws otherwise, and she was only 12 or 3 when she married. Most likely she died, perhaps in childbirth and neither she nor her child survived. What I don't have to look at, since I'm not a DODD researcher, and my real interest is in tracing the children (if any) of these two couples (since such children would be WEBB descendants through Matilda Caroline Webb Patterson (Mrs. Plesent W "Peter) is the 1850/60/70/80 DODD information for the parents of Marcella Dodd Patterson and James M. Patterson, her brother. 3.  The pattersons in sabine and the pattersons in St. Landrays Parish, and Rapides?  DID they enroll in both census=-OR Are they different families? I have Matilda Caroline and Plesent W "Peter" Patterson in Sabine in 1850, San Augustine in 1860, Rapides 1870, and ST. Landry's in 1880. Nothing inconsistent about that. I just looked at the 1850 San Augustine and the PATTERSON families there don't have similar names, and I found NO DODD families in it. Could you be missing the change in the years? I would make sure of all our initials first. Then I would look in the searchable 1880 DBs for Malisa/Melissa/MC/ Melissa Caroline/Caroline b 1848 TX and for Marcella/Lucy/ Lucy Marcella/ Marcella Lucy/ ML/ LM b whatever is the right year and place. See if we turn either of the gals up. IF we do perhaps we can work backwards from there. Anne

    1. [PATTERSON] war widows Patterson/DODD-missing in action
    2. Hello Anne, Hello the mailing lists, We again are tackling this woman problem. In way of explanation we have two men of the almost identical name who married two women of almost identical name. Two familys, a brother and sister dodd wed a sister and brother patterson in san aug. co. tx in fall of 1860. The two bridegrooms go 105 miles from san augustine co. tx to camp rondo, arkansas and both of them die before they even get to war of measles and flux. Buried together in arkansas. WE can't find the widows!!!..The dodd patterson girl had a child and we tracked him with help of the patterson mail list to 1880 in Louisiana to Rapides Parish and loose him there married to a rougeou woman. AS far as we know the other marriage, the patterson dodd girl was just 15 as a widow and did not bear a child to that groom. These all Marcella, melissa's and marcrissa's whatever...are giving me fits...I am about to number them one, two, three, four and five?. WE know those two bridegrooms, the boys died! WE have the final payment showing james N. Patterson died November 1862, and lucy marcella dodd patterson, the widow, was paid his death payments, confederate money. We have the attendance card on james M.DODD showing he died in jan of 1863 and was not present at roll call. What is giving me fits...is the pattersons in sabine co. at the same time there were pattersons in Louisiana....and both with almost identical names ages, husbands and wives. AND IS one of these PATTERSON WOMEN with the malissa, marcella names our lucy marcella dodd Patterson who Evidently DID marry again a PATTERSON man and lived in SABINE CO.? Can anyone sort this out for me...I am going in circles. 1. we do not know what happened to lucy marcella dodd patterson after mid, 1860's when she hired the lawyer to go get her husbands pay? 2. we have a legend that one of the dodd girls married a man named JOHN DUNLAP and she is the only one left alive.?(well, elizabeth is living-but she lives and dies a grabener) .Could be just a misunderstood, misunder-remembered, granny story? 3. The pattersons in sabine and the pattersons in St. Landrays Parish, and Rapides? DID they enroll in both census=-OR Are they different families? 4. and yes, james M. Patterson , son of lucy dodd and james N. Patterson did marry the Rougeu (I think I mis spell that every time I type it..sorry) woman in Rapides parish. We loose h im there. 5. and who are these women, with the similiar names in sabine ? You can separate the momma of marcella patterson and pleasants wife by the age....but that leaves two women with the same almost names first and last. one in louisiana and one in sabine co. tx.? or am I reading it wrong...? 6. our lucy M. DODD Patterson was born in 1842 (8 years old in 1850 and 18 at marriage--20 years old at widowhood.(we loose her here in 1865-she or her family hired a san augustine lawyer to go to the CSA and collect her dead husbands pay). This woman, her mother, her siblings are not found in 1870 anywhere in texas census listings under any DODD name? . I have not found her on the 1870 all of texas cd under any form of her name or Patterson. (aka: lucy Dodd, Lucy ann Autry, Louis Taylor DODD, Amelia DODD, louisa M. (or anne) DODD, Marcella -Melissa-? LM.DODD PATTERSON, Lucy M. Patterson, ? can't find them. In 1860 they(the dodd family that we know about) were in San augustine. In 1880 they were in Bandera co. in 1870 and 1871 they were in Burleson co. getting married, (lucy ann dodd (melissa's momma) to lewis autry and louis taylor dodd to victoria collins). They are not in the 1870 census for burleson. (amelia was dead by 1880=childbirth) 7. your marcella elizabeth patterson dodd was 13 at marriage in 1860 and 15 at widowhood? (have any of the patterson families tracked this young woman? what happened to her?) I don't see her in her mothers home? I don't find her in her sister, Mrs. grabener's home? DID she get the measles and die too? where was she in 1870? OUR girl is missing in 1870 also... Two confederate widows with 41 dollars and 13 cents in their pocket..? where would they go, but home? We looked for these girls last year but sorta gave up. Anyone have a source at their fingertips..please look for them...and yes, we have checked some graveyards...not all in texas--or LA but some. WE should live so long to check all. sigh.grin. It seems that finding these women should just be a matter of looking for marriage records...but it has not proven so. Census has been a problem too. and is causing even more mysteries. All help appreciated--or ideas? sincerely, judy hugg grimes

    3. Susi, Thanks for the uniform lead. Have you found anything since we exchanged to sort out the Wash. Co Pattersons? I found out mine back to landfall, North America. If you remember, I was searching out Robert and Eliz Patterson buried in Brooke County (St. John's) but I couldn't find out the parents of my g-g-g-grandfather William Patterson (m. Nancy McCready). Turns out he is the son the John Patterson (m. Jane/Jean Scott) of Bethel Ridge (near Eldersville). John is the brother of James Patterson (m. Sarah Given). Found out by a photograph of a log cabin. On the back my grandmother had written "where William was born" and a lady from Eldersville (96 years old) remembered the house (which was near her girlhood home) was the home of James and John Patterson. Amazing. So now I'm trying to learn how to do Ulster research. Since these Pattersons emigrated about 1795 the records are bleak. I've been searching Donegal County #1 because it's interesting and #2 because there is a lot of info and #3 because James and Robert Patterson/Paterson from Ayrshire settled there on the James Cunningham estates about 1614 and #4 because the Scotts are believed to be from Donegal....but I have no firm reason to believe these Pattersons are from Donegal (as most Pattersons are from Antrim and Down and many also from Derry). But these Bethel Ridge Pattersons built a Methodist Episcopal and a Methodist Protestant Church on Bethel Ridge and I have found no other Methodist Pattersons. So much for rambling. Let me know where your search has led and I'll see if I have collected any new info. The ladies who tracked down the Patterson Farm in Eldersville, PA also so the Robert McCready uniform.... so now I'm intrigued with finding it. And finally, Rev. Joseph Patterson is pretty well documented in Washington County isn't he? 1. [PATTERSON] found as missing child- lost as an adult?
    2. Hello Patterson mailing list, Please, take a minute and read this query. thanks. Last Year on this mailing list, so very many of the PATTERSON people joined together and helped our DODD family locate a little 8 year old boy who was living with his grandparents Patterson in St. Landry's Parish in 1870. The child's father died the same year ,the little son was born, in Camp Rondo, Arkansas of Measles and Flux and never got to war. The Mother of the child known as: "Lucy" Marilla( DODD) PATTERSON widow of James N. Patterson hired a lawyer to go to the CSA and pick up her dead husbands wages from the war department. She evidently survived widowhood, the trials and illnesses of the war, because she left a story in our family-a legend of not knowing where her little boy was raised.? WE have lost her in time, thinking she may have married a man by the name of JOHN DUNLAP-by 1870 there were MANY men of that name in Texas. The little boy grew up and is found in Louisiana but we loose him between 1880 and later. We have thought that he may have married and moved to New Orleans? unknown. His grandparents were in their 60's in the 1870's so most probably soon he was on his own. WE have checked most data bases and on line sirname places and directories, and military files, census reading and all the usual places and have not found this james M. Patterson born 1862 TX. Would you on the Patterson list again check your documents and see if you have this young man in your data in Louisiana? Our combined families are searching for his descendants to tell them of all the wonderful things we have found out about his family and their related lines. We are looking for some living cousins of this family of James M. Patterson, born in texas, raised in Louisiana after the civil war. thanks again for any help and I am wishing us good luck..judy hugg grimes: Yorba linda, CA.
