Hi Dick, Thanks for your note. My original brickwall was Samuel Patterson, who married Martha Ledgerwood. Now you mention that it was James Patterson that married Martha. Per two others who sent me notes, a Robert Patterson married Martha Ledgerwood. At least I know not to rely on the Samuel Patterson theory any more, and probably I was wrong. However, it seems certain that Martha married a Patterson. At any rate, I would like to know your source for the marriage of Martha to a James Patterson? Also I would be delighted to have anything you have on the Ledgerwoods of Augusta. I can share a little on their descendents. Thanks again, Regards, Ernest ----- Original Message ----- From: "Richard Hamrick" <rhamrick@cfw.com> To: <VAAUGUST-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Thursday, May 16, 2002 12:32 PM Subject: [VAAUGUST] Re: VAAUGUST-D Digest V02 #73 > Martha Ledgerwood was born either in Scotland or Ireland before 1838, as she > is listed on her Fathers declaration of importation in Orange County, VA , > Februarya 1739. Those of you researching Pattersons in early Virginia, might be interested in the book: "Tinkling Spring--Headwater of Freedom" by Howard McKnight Wilson, ThD. The church was begun in 1740. I believe the book mentions surnames Baskin, Patterson, Gillespie and I am sure, others as well. If it isn't in a library near you, ask if it can be gotten on inter-library loan. I believe the Family History library in Salt Lake has it, and your Family History Center may can order it at your request. Leave no stone unturned. Midge G.
Searchers of Sutton/Patterson/Gard/Ellis Here is # 2 of 4 news articles (1st was Obit of Samuel Sutton) I found in my grandmother's trunk, Hannah Sutton Ellis. I happen to have a copy of the picture mentioned in the article and as soon as I figure out how and where to post a copy of it, I will and then I'll notify the message boards of the above names. ( Suggestions welcome!) I would appreciate any help on the Patterson/Gard/Ellis line. I can answer some Sutton information, however, you can find this line on Family Search.com and then check the Ancestral File for Samuel Sutton. Thanks everyone, Vickie in OK ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------------------------- Newspaper Article, 1904 - Cypress Township - Missouri - Samuel Sutton A HAPPY REUNION On last Tuesday, Feb 23rd, the (?? Corner of article missing) at the residence of R. S. Ellis, in Cypress township, this county, the surviving brothers and sisters of the Sutton family. Uncle Samuel Sutton, who, with his aged wife (Mary G. Patterson), lives with their daughter Mrs. Hannah Ellis, is the oldest, being 88 years old. The other brothers present were Capt. Simeon Sutton of Bethany, and Harvey Sutton, of LaSalle County, ILLs. And Julia A Gard of Cypress township, this county, together with quite a number of children and others related to the different Sutton families. The above named brothers and sister are the survivors of a family of eleven children, all of whom lived to a good old age except one, Jacob Sutton, who died soon after the civil war ended, from exposure while serving in the Federal army. The combined ages of the three brothers and sister are 323 years, an average of 80 years and nine months. It was an affecting sight to see these old people living their lives over again the few short hours they were permitted to be together, as one brother had not been seen by the others for forty-four years. An enjoyable time was spent by all those present and after a bountiful repast was served, prepared by Mrs. Ellis as she knows well how to do a photographer appeared and photographed the venerable people and their descendants in several different groups. After which well wishes and hand shaking being over the friends and relatives began to leave for their homes. Among those present, besides those mentioned above, were: Mrs. Capt. Sutton, Mr. And Mrs. J H Sutton, and Mrs. W H Gillispie, of Bethany; W G Sutton, Rutland, Ill.; J P Sutton, Happy Valley, Mo; Dr. and Mrs. B M Sutton, Bridgeport, Mo; and Wm H Sutton and family, Cypress, MO. >From the book A HISTORY OF COLLIN COUNTY, TEXAS by Stambaugh. "James M. Brown was twice married... His first wife was Mary Patterson, daughter of William Patterson, a Baptist preacher in Georgia." Alvin Patterson was his brother-in-law. They were in Fannin County TX in 1854 then in Plano TX in 1857. COPEVILLE: " Miles Cope came to the area in 1848 with his brother, James Cope. Some other early settlers were Robert and John Patterson,............................."
My wall is Charles Patterson and wife Mary from Sevier County TN. Charles was b abt 1788-90 Mary b 1790. Census records for their daughter Pricilla say that her parents were born in TN. Charles died before 1850 and Mary died sometime between 1855 and 1858 when their land was sold and the remainer divided between 3 of their daughters Priscilla Lafarlett (mine), Elizabeth Naughers, and Nancy Russell. There was another daughter living at home in the 1850 census with Mary and the unmarried Elizabeth: Matilda b1832. It also appears that there were 2 other children in this family : Chenessa Edmonds (wife of Brice) and John Patterson. Pricillia moved with her husband Jeremiah Lafarlett (Lafollette) to Marshall County Al in about 1848. Chenessa and Brice Emonds along with John Patterson also moved to this same county a short time later. Thanks Linda Davis
My road block is the father of David Wilson Patterson, born 1827 in West Newton, PA who lived in Rostraver Twp (which is a West Newton address), Westmoreland Co, PA, married Alice Armstrong, had two (?) brothers known to me - Israel and Frank (? Francis). His sons include Francis Marion Patterson (born 1840 in Westmoreland Co, PA) and Omer Patterson. His father may be William Patterson died 1842, lived in same area, married to Jane Corbin, but I have no other info to go on. Thanks for any help! Ed Boone
Hi, The brick wall in our family is Ziba Patterson. He was born in New York state in 1830. He came down south to Mississippi as a supervisor with the railroad around 1850-60. He married Ellen Shoemake and they settled in Louisiana. He was a Baptist preacher. His father was from Scotland. I would like to find his relatives that remained in New York. I'm sure I must have some cousins still there. Thanks, Kay
