    1. [PATTERSON-L] PATTERSON, JAMES S.
    2. Jo Ann Baxley
    3. I don¹t know who wrote this, but I received it from the Lancaster Historical Society in their effort to help me sort out my Patterson family of John Boyd Patterson, b 1773 in Lancaster Co.; d 1843 in Montour Co. This piece of infomation is typed verbatim from the copy except for changing the position of the numbers of the dates. Jo Ann Patterson Baxley [email protected] James Smart Patterson - Elder 1881 James Smart Patterson was born 8 Aug 1838 and died 1 Jan 1916. His wife, Margaret Elizabeth Ferguson Patterson was born 27 Oct 1844 and died 5 Feb 1891, a daughter of Thomas and Anna Dripps Ferguson. He was a son of James Patterson (b 17 Mar 1796--d 2 Aug 1872) and Rebecca Black Patterson (b 12 Sept 1801--d 3 Nov 1877) whose marriage took place 18 Dec 1823. An interesting fact concerns Mr. Patterson¹s middle name. His grandmother was Lettice Gardner who was born 27 Mar 1759 and died 26 June 1832. She married James Patterson, Jr. (b 3 Nov 1745, old style). The eldest sister of Lettice was Mary Gardner (b 1 Feb 1744) Mary married Scottish clergyman James Smart 1 feb 1765 with whom she embarked to Scotland in June of 1766, never to return to America. Almost seventy years after this event, the name was still sufficiently remembered by the Patterson family to be used in naming a child. Prebyterian clergymen were few in 1765 in Southern Chester and Lancaster Counties and Mr. Smart was probably well-known among Scotch-Irish residents. Nearly every family of Pattersons and Andrews had a boy named Francis Gardner, mostly called Frank. This name also continued through female lines into other families. The name has been in use in this area for over two hundred years. James Smart Patterson was a prosperous farmer. His farm was part of the ancestral land south of White Rock in Little Britain township, 212 acres in extent, one third of which was woodland. It adjoined the farm of Bordley S. Patterson and three houses were erected on the property. He received his education in district schools and at Hopewell Academy in Chester Co. It should also be noted that he was a substantial subscriber to the church building fund in 1869 when he was but 31 years old. Mr. and Mrs. Patterson had five children: 1. Mary, married Lt. J. Howard Griffiths 2. Charles, married Mary Webb of Drumore 3. Chester, born 19 April 1872, married Clara Fisher 4. James, Jr., born 17 Mar 1874, moved to Omaha 5. Anna K., married Melville Barr of Colerain Mrs. Patterson died 5 Feb 1891 and 10 Feb 1898, Mr. Patterson married Mrs. William (Jane) Worden, a daughter of Samuel and Elizabeth Thompson of Philadelphia. In 1884, Mr. Patterson was achosen as a delegate from the Westminister Presbytery to the General Assembly at Saratoga Springs; and in 1892 he again was so honored and attended the General Assembly held at Portland, Oregon. His father and President Buchanan were personal friends and his grandfather, also James, was a member of Captain Thomas Whiteside¹s Company of Militia when it left for the Jerseys 13 Aug 1776.

    3. Dick, Thanks, but actually the descendants of John Patterson (1766) who married Margaret Black are pretty well documented within our family. I just double checked the surnames listing on my website (link below). Feel free to use any of the data. Take care and good luck finding your line also! 1. [PATTERSON-L] Olivia PATTERSON, WIDOW OF ?? PATTERSON children listed below
    2. Frankie
    3. Hello, I am researching the family of Daisy Linty LEE. In her obit of 1933 it lists her parents as Germaine LEE and Olivia PATTERSON. I am guessing that Olivia would have been born about 1836. Also mentioned in the obit are Daisy's siblings. The only two males listed have the surname PATTERSON. >From this I am assuming that Olivia was married before and that her married name is PATTERSON. The obit states that Olivia was born in Nashville, Davidson, TN. The two children are as follows: Everett PATTERSON b. bef 1876 d. ? (living in Tieton, Yakima, WA in 1933) Roy PATTERSON b. bef 1876 d. ? (living in Zillah, Yakima, WA in 1933) Of course, I suppose her mom (Olivia) could have married AFTER Daisy was born, too. Her mom could have been living in 1933 and perhaps was born around 1856. It is all conjecture on my part! The obit doesn't state whether her parents are living or deceased. Does anyone have an Everett or Roy PATTERSON who were in Yakima County in the 1930's? Frankie (Linda DeFrees Franks) Soda Springs, Idaho [email protected]
