Thanks, Carolyn; I needed that. Rascally is right! I forgot to mention that after my Mr. Patterson went his way, Elizabeth Findley Patterson remarried to a Bryson and started a line of half-kin to my Patterson line. So she lived past 1837, so that John Patterson's info might indicate another, different Elizbeth Findley who died in 1837, about the time that my Jerry M. Patterson was being born. Thanks to the several folks who responded to my SOS. I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Major project surprise at work. Hopefully, if I'm not too exhausted tonite, I'll respond. Many Kind regards, Philip "Nonrascally" Sheppard (ask my wife!) Beaufort, South Carolina

    1. [PATTERSON-L] the Mysterious Mr. Patterson of Tennessee
    2. Philip Sheppard
    3. Evening Rooters, This is my first post to the list. I should have such luck as I had on the Waddell and Kerr lists: first post; got ancestors and cousins. I have an unknown Patterson who married(maybe married) Elizabeth Findley (Elizabeth: b. abt 1817 in Tennessee, d. aft 1870 in North Carolina). I can only assume that Mr. Patterson was born there also, but maybe just across the line from Blount County in North Carolina. I just don't know. In any case, Mr. Patterson must have either died shortly after marrying Miss Findley, or he just left. But he was married to her long enough to father one son, and one son only, Jerry Monroe Patterson, my gg-grandfather, who married Julie A. Kerr of Blount County, Tennessee, daughter of Maclin Kerr and Lucinda Davis Kerr. Jerry may have been born in either (what is now) Swain County, North Carolina or Northern Macon County (which went to the Tennessee line back then). In abt 1896, Jerry and Julie settled in the Cowee Valley of Macon County, North Carolina. They are buried in the Snow Hill Methodist Church Cemetery just north of Franklin in Macon County. If anyone can identify the Mysterious Mr. Patterson who married (maybe married) Elizabeth Findley, and give some kind of documentation, I will build a shrine, burn insense, and chant, "Finder of the Patterson, Finder of the Patterson..." <G> Many kind regards, Philip Sheppard Beaufort, South Carolina

    1. [PATTERSON-L] William Wilson Pattison
    2. Hi- I know this will be a long shot, but I am looking for relatives of William Wilson PATTISON, born 15 Nov 1831 in Kirk Hammerton, Knaresborough, Yorkshire, Eng. William is my gg grandfather. He was the son of Lawrence Pattison and Mary Clark, He arrived in the US prior to 1850. William married a widow, Susan Hunt Hedley in 1852, supposedly in St. Louis, MO. William and Susan then had 10 or 11 children in the Macoupin and Jackson County areas of IL. The Pattisons then moved to El Dorado, Butler Co., Kansas in 1870's. and died there in 1912. I think that William came to the US to be with siblings- they would have been in the St. Louis, MO area around the 1850's. Possible sibs include James, George, Wilson, John, Emma, and Hannah. Any info would be most appreciated. Thanks- Cindy Spencer

    1. [PATTERSON-L] Patterson Mountain, Canada
    2. Hi everyone, In a conversation with a distant cousin last week, she mentioned a mountain in Canada (the western part she thought) that was named Patterson Mountain. Does anyone know of this? Who was this mountain named for? I have a ggg uncle, Robert Emmet Patterson, born 1872, who left Chester Co., PA and went to western Canada. He was killed in a logging accident sometime after 1894, probably between 1914 & 1920. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks and regards, Debbie :-)

    1. [PATTERSON-L] PATTERSON, Andrew P., b: abt 1780, d: abt 1834, Kaw Township, MO
    2. George Patterson
    3. I've hit a brick wall in researching my ggg-grandfather, Andrew P. Patterson. The first time I'm able to locate any information on him is when he received a 17 Jun 1825 land patent for 149.86 acres in Lillard County, Missouri (Lillard became Lafayette County on 16 Feb 1825). On 15 Dec 1826, he was nominated for and appointed the first Justice of Peace for Kaw Township, Jackson County, Missouri. He presided over two presidential elections during his tenure. 2 Apr 1829, he was granted a second land patent for 160.49 acres in Jackson County. He was married to Rachel (unknown last name, date & place of birth, date & place of marriage, date & place of death). They had 8 children: David, Thomas, Rebecca (married Samuel Sweet, 13 Sep 1832, in Jackson Co., MO), Betsey, Robert, Risin, Margaret, (b: abt 1806, married Silas Hitchcock, 15 Feb 1827 in Jackson Co., MO), and Andrew (b: abt 1803; d: abt 1841, married Elizabeth Hitchcock, daughter of Isaac Hitchcock Sr. They had 7 children: Andrew, Mary (b: abt 1828, d: 5 Apr 1851, Williams Landing, Santa Cruz Co., CA, married: James Williams), Isaac Sr., (b: 16 Jul 1831, Jackson Co., MO, d: 18 Sep 1906 in Gilroy, Santa Clara Co., CA, married: Samantha Ellen Barnes, 28 Jun 1854), Lydia Alice (b: 2 Oct 1832, d: 15 Dec 1884 in CA, married Isaac Williams, Jr 1 Jan 1850 in Santa Cruz, Santa Cruz Co., CA), Margaret, (b: abt 1833, married James Frazier), John Jefferson, (b: 13 Nov 1836, d: 22 Dec 1842, killed by a falling tree), and Helen Melinda, (b: 1838, d: 1913, married John F. McClure, 18 Jan 1855 in San Juaquin Valley, CA). Elizabeth Hitchcock Patterson, her 5 children (Mary, Isaac, Lydia, Margaret, and Helen) and her father, Isaac Hitchcock Sr. were members of the Stephens-Townsend-Murphy wagon train of 1844. They were the first pioneer wagons over the Sierra Nevada mountain range at what is now known as Donner Summit more than a year before the ill-fated Donner party perished. They left Council Bluffs, Iowa on 22 May 1844 and crossed the summit of the Sierra Nevada on 25 November 1844. If anyone has any information on any of this Patterson family, please contact me. H E L P !!!!!!!!! This brick wall seems to be getting thicker or maybe the family was dropped of by a passing UFO <VBG>. 2. John Patterson
    3. Chuck, Based on info in responses and using some logic and family information to confirm it, I believe that the written census records list males then females but the age numbers in the readouts from the FTM Census CDs reverses this and you get the female numbers first then the male numbers. Lisa's input was the key, she said to look at a Census Line for a single Widow and it becomes obvious which numbers are the females. 3. Fellow Patterson Researchers: I have a puzzle that I hope some of you can help me with. In the 1850 Lincoln County, Tennessee Census there is the following: George Kirkland 22 TN Susan 21 Jasper G. 1 James Patterson 27 TN Martha 25 John W. 4 Mary 2 Nancy J. 4 mo. Nancy (Mother) 51 NC Thomas Harris 11 George 10 Nancy A. 8 My question is this. I have found evidence that leads me to believe that George Kirkland married Susan Patterson a sister to James. James Patterson is also a son of Mother, Nancy. I have a feeling that these Harris children are children of a dead daughter. Have any of you Pattersons out there done any research on this family? There are several Pattersons in Lincoln County at this time but most of them were more prominent that I think these might have been. What happened to James' father and who was he? Were there other siblings of James? I do know there is one son not listed to James and Martha and his name is Steve Patterson. He married Rebeca Lewis a sister to the Eliza Jane Lewis that John Jackson Wesley Patterson married. I am hoping to receive help from some of you. I am tied down with a Mother who has had a broken hip and has Alzheimers. So I can't go to the library and run this family down. I think this James Patterson to be my gggrandfather but I need to be sure. Without some further information I don't think I can be sure. Maybe I had better explain why I am wondering about this man. The John W. is John Wesley Jackson Patterson b1846 and died 1934. His mother, Martha, lived with him the rest of her life. He lived on a fairly large farm in what became Moore County, Tn. apparently on land left him by his father. He never did anything but breed horses so the family is pretty sure he did not make enough money to pay for a farm its size. Also John Jackson Wesley was buried as Jackson Wesley. He was never known by anythng other than Jackie. The census records all say John and this one says John W. Too many unanswered questions. I hope some of you have researched this family and will share your research with you. I will be glad to share anything I have in return. Thank you for your effort in my behalf. 3. Marty, Keith, Viola, anyone, Can anyone help me track down some info for Ken Wright? Ken is searching for the ancestors of his g-grandfather, William Patterson, born ca 1875-1880, if I read his note correctly. Please read the following. Thanks. Wes Patterson At 06:55 PM 10/20/98 +0000, you wrote: Hello Wes, My name is Ken Wright and I was given your e-mail address by Joan King of Fannin County, GA. I am the grandson of Florence Irene Patterson, daughter of William Patterson, (Ancestry unknown) and Laura Brown, daughter of Hiram King Brown and Esther,(or Easter) Caroline Ballew. The person that I seek is William Patterson. All I know of him is pass-down stories and haven't been able to document anything on him yet. The information on him that seems useable is that he was in Fannin county for the years of about 1905-1915 and he was older than Laura Brown by as much as 15years. She was cooking in a "lumber camp" when they met/married, supposedly he worked in the woods at which trade I don't know. Laura was born April 14, 1890 in GA, probably Fannin county. I am waiting to hear from Joan again on the Brown line, Hiram King Brown is also her ancestor. That may help fill in some blanks, but there are big holes to fill on this elusive Patterson line. Can you help, or offer any suggestions?
