Josiah Patterson {14 April 1837 - 10 February 1904}: representative from Tennessee, father of representative Malcolm Rice Patterson. Patterson was born in Morgan County, Alabama. He Attended public schools and the Somerville Academy, then studied law. He was admitted to the bar, and began practice in Morgan County in 1859. During the Civil War Patterson was a first lieutenant in the Army of the Confederacy. He attained the rank of captain, then colonel, and During the last year of the war was assigned the command of the Fifth Regiment of the Alabama Calvary. At the end of the war Patterson resume his law practice, settling in Florence, Alabama, in 1867. In 1872 he moved to Memphis and became a member of the state house of representatives. He was a presidential elector on the Democratic slate of 1888, and three years later was elected to the Fifty-second Congress. Hr was reelected twice but lost his bid for reelection to the Fifty-fifth Congress. Patterson resumed his private practice of law in Memphis, where he died. Thomas MacDonald Patterson {4 November 1839 - 23 July 1916}: delegate, representative, senator from Colorado. Patterson was born in Ireland and immigrated to the United States with his parents; they settled in New York City in 1849. He attended the public schools there and then moved to Crawfordsville, Indiana, in 1853, where he worked in a printing office for three years and in the shop of a watchmaker and jeweler for five years. During the Civil War Patterson served in the Indiana Volunteer Infantry for one year; he then attended Indiana Asbury College {now DePauw University} for one year, and subsequently Wabash College, in Crawfordsville, Indiana---- also for one year. He studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1867, and began practice in Crawfordsville. In 1872 Patterson moved to Denver, Colorado; there he continued his private practice and also served as city attorney in 1873 and 1874. He was elected a democratic delegate to the Forty-fourth Congress, and when the territory became a state in 1876 was elected a representative to the Forty-fifth Congress. He did not run for reelection to the Forty-fifth Congress, but returned to Denver to practice law. Patterson was a member of the Democratic National Committee from 1874 to 1880, and a delegate to the Democratic National Committee of 1876, '80, '88, and '92. In 1890 he purchased the Rocky Mountain News, and later the Denver Times. In 1901 Patterson was elected to the senate; he served until 1907. He then returned to his newspaper business in Denver, where he died. John Henry Patterson {13 December 1844 - 7 May 1922}: manufacturer of cash registers. Patterson was born near Dayton, Ohio, the son of Jefferson and Julia Johnston Patterson. He grew up in a rural area, and attended Dayton Central High School, then Miami University in Oxford, Ohio --- for one year. He left in 1863 to enlist in the 131st Ohio Regiment, but never saw active service. After the war he entered Dartmouth College {Hanover, New Hampshire}. He was dissatisfied in College, and although he received his degree in 1867, he thought his liberal education useless. For several years he floundered, moving from one job to another. After several years as a coal merchant working with his brothers, Patterson invested his entire savings in the National Manufacturing Company of Dayton, which had just started making cash registers. Since the factory was doing very poorly, Patterson's brothers ridiculed him for the investment. But he had finally, at forty, found a use for his broad college education; psychology, philosophy, mathematics---all were useful; he took over the company and bankrolled it into the famous National Cash Register. Patterson became interested in the machine as well as the company, and developed many improvements in its structure. After the first few years with the company, however, he left the technical matters to the expert mechanics, and took over the sales department----where he again became interested in development. He employed many novel advertising devices, including sales conventions, educational programs for his salesmen, commissions for high sales performance, and direct--mail promotion. {He was one of the first to depend heavily on direct--mail.} Patterson was also a pioneer in employee relations; he established many health and welfare measures to protect his workers, including the development of a factory school for education and entertainment, generous insurance benefits, and the creation of playgrounds and gardens in the area surrounding the factory. Patterson was married on 18 December 1888 to Katherine Beck, and had two children. He died while on a trip to Atlantic City.
<< You wrote Can anyone provide information about a Patterson marrying a Eva Quck in NC? My husband has been told that his line is Robert Patterson of Kentucky. Robert Patterson was a surveyer in Lexington, Ky and Dayton,Oh and established both townsites. Sorry for not knowing dates. Thanks so much, J & D J & D, The only information that I have on this Robert Patterson came from "Fincastle County Kentucky Records" Vol. 1, by Michael L. Cook C.G. & Bettie Cummings Cook, C.G., Kentucky Records Series 1985 Cook Publication, Evansville, IN. In the Fayette Co, KY Records of the Circuit Court there is a long document. Starting date in March 31, 1804 (p.289). Francis Patterson and Arthur Patterson v. John Bradford. It it "Francis Patterson on January 17, 1780, in consequence of an improvement made for him by a certain Robert Patterson in 1776 obtained from the Court of Commissioners a certificate for a right of preemption to 1,000 acres of land in Fayette County, on the North fork of Cane run, to include his improvement." Francis enters 1,000 acres land on preemption warrant No. 852 on Cane Run.... Later the document, which mentions Robert Patterson several times, states that Robert set out for Kentucky in 1775 from his father's (Francis) home in the back parts of Pennsylvania. It also mentions a brother William, a brother Francis, sisters Martha and Mary, and I believe another brother Arthur. Francis Sr. died in 1802. Was your Robert a Colonel in a war? Lana, As a correction to my previous website address, I have not had success using the address I got from the rootsweb newsletter, but dropping off the /> at the end worked for me--i.e. www.rootsweb.com/~paphilad Hope this helps in your search. David P.
This is a multi-part message in MIME format. --part0_921549727_boundary Content-ID: <[email protected]_out.mail.aol.com.1> Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Lana, In reply to request on Robert James Patterson, I cannot tell if he is a relation or not as unfortunately I do not know the names of Alexander's brothers. I only know that he had brothers who came with him from Northern Ireland and his brothers were active Orangemen, but my brother was not. As you noted, the gernation is similar, so could possibly be. In reply to your query on my search methods, I have relied primarily on my father and his records and photographs. He has photos of gravesites which gave me birth and death dates. Also, I was able to obtain Alexander's will which gave me the names of his children and the maiden name of his wife and wife's sisters name. If you want other info. on researching in Philadelphia, try the new rootsweb site at www.rootsweb.com/~paphilad/> and this will give you names and addresses of city offices and other info. Other than this, I cannot tell you much more. I like you do not live near Philly--I live in Minnesota. When I get back again, I hope I may be able to search newspapers for obituaries. These have been a great source of info, on my mother's side and I hope they will be the same for my father's side. Searching ship passenger lists has not produced any results. Alexander and Sarah, his wife, were born 1848-1849 and Great Britain did not keep records of births back then. Sorry I could not provide more info. on any of Alexander's brothers but he did not visit much. My grandfather used to say he was a man who liked to keep his feet under his own table. I am doing research on the Pattersons of the Philadelphia area, but keep coming up with dead ends. I'm living in a Native community in northern Saskatchewan, Canada and am limited as to resources. I was recently discouraged when I sent for a marriage certificate from the Philadelphia Archives that I was sure would provide me with the information I needed, only to discover that I either have the wrong date or the marriage for some odd reason was not registered. Your information is intriguing to Mme.'s your great grandfather would be around the same age/generation as the Robert Patterson (married 6/27/1883, wife's name is Kate Wirth who was born 1858 and died 1888 at 29 yrs.) I am trying to find information on. We suspect he, too, may have come from Ireland or Scotland. He was a cloth cutter in Philadelphia who died fairly young (we suspect - we have no records of his death) leaving an orphaned son at approximately age 7. The son's name was Robert James Patterson who was raised at a boy's school called Girard College. This Robert James Patterson was my husband's grandfather. If you have any information that may tie in with this I'd appreciate hearing from you again. And I'd like to know what you have used as resources in your search of the Philadelphia Pattersons. I look forward to hearing from you again. Lana Patterson --part0_921549727_boundary--

Seeking information on John PATTERSON and wife Susan ADAMS. Married in 1812, Ohio, I think. They had at least one child, James A. PATTERSON, b1813, again, I think. Any suggestions appreciated. Thank you. Jan
Dear N. J. in MI: I have started putting together who I think are the children on William Patterson of Mercer Co, KY. I believe he might be the father of my Johnathan Patterson who married Rebecca Lapoun (Lafoun, Lavon, LaPhawn) 3 Oct, 1805 in Mercer Co. William was surety for Johnathan. I did some research in Frankfort, KY last year and found as you did that Wm. shows up in the 1800 census (first showing in tax records also). I found him in tax records from 1800-1803. I found no Pattersons for 1804 and the Armstead shows in 1805 alone. In 1806, Wm., Jonathan, and Armstead. In 1807, Wm., Goldman, John, and Armstead. In 1808, John, Goldman, Armstead, and Joseph. In 1809, Armstead, Goldman, John and William. In 1810, William, Armstead, William, Joseph, Goldman and John, etc. I have not found a will for William, but I have assumed (hopefully to be proven OR disproven) that William Sr. had sons Armstead, Johnathan, Goldman, Joseph, and William. I'm sorry to say I have not had a chance to get into the Mercer Co. marriages. If William is the father of my Johnathan, then some info on Johnathan brother in "Perrins History of Kentucky" says William was a revelutionary war soldier under Gen. Washington and was from PA. I don't have any additional info on this family and have not found anything additional about Wm. Laura [email protected]

Carlile Pollock Patterson {24 August 1816 - 15 August 1881}: scientist. The son of Captain Daniel Tod Patterson, Carlile was born in Shieldsborough, Mississippi. Like his father, Patterson entered the US Navy. He served as a midshipman for 5 years in the Mediterranean, then returned to the United States in 1835 to study engineering at Georgetown College in Kentucky. After his graduation he entered the federal coastal survey in 1861, and by 1874 was made superintendent. Under his administration the department was enlarged into a general geodetic survey, and Patterson was responsible for inaugurating many of the coastal experiments performed by the bureau, although he had no formal geodetic training. Patterson was a member of the US Lighthouse Board, and was awarded an honorary LL. D by Amherst College. He died in Washington, D.C. David Trotter Patterson {28 February 1818 - 3 November 18891}: senator from Tennessee. Born in Cedar Creek, Tennessee, Patterson attended the public schools and Greenville College {Greenville, Tennessee}, where he studied for two years. Following that he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1841, and began practice in Greenville. At the same time he took up manufacturing. In 1854 Patterson was appointed judge of the First Circuit Court of Tennessee; he sat on that bench for nine years. After the Civil War, when Tennessee was readmitted to the Union, Patterson was elected a Democrat to the Senate, where he served from 1866 to 1869; he was not a candidate for reelection. He returned to Greenville to manage various agricultural businesses. Patterson died in Afton, a town near Greenville.

Some time back I put three family histories on the Patterson-L. Can anyone tell me how I can find the place to read these on the Patterson-L? I know there are places for Obituaries, Marriages, etc and I am assuming these were cataloged somewhere on the "list" but I don't know how to get there. Thanks, Elizabeth
