Bev: Levander Garland Pate is really a SC rather than a NC name. I have a number of references for the name. There are some interesting Stubbs and Pate family lines involved. Julia Claire Pate wrote that -- Elizabeth Pate, dau of Lt Col Thoroughgood Pate I and Francis Bright, md John Weldon Stubbs. Elizabeth Pate Stubbs 1809-1878 and John Weldon Stubbs 1807-1884 had issue, among whom was Martha Francis Stubbs. "Martha F. Stubbs md Levander Garland Pate, a prominent merchant of Sumter, S.C." Levander G Pate appears in the 1860 census of Sumter Co SC. Page 176, site 25/24, Sumter PO. L G Pate appears in the 1870 census of Sumter co SC. Page 321, site 106/116, Sumter PO. In 1880 it is Lavander Pate at ED 127, sheet 28, site 220/220, Sumter PO. This couple does not appear in the 1900 SC census but there are descendants in several households in Sumter Co. She perhaps died in 1902. Same is true for 1910, 1920 and 1930.
