I recently spent a day in San Augustine doing genealogy research. My main goal was to verify the FITZGERALD information that I had been provided by a helpful researcher. Mary FITZGERALD, daughter of Jackson FITZGERALD, married Joseph T. PATE in San Augustine County, TX in 1856. There were no records to indicate that they stayed in San Augustine after the marriage. They were in Anderson County, Texas at the time of the 1860 census. I did take notes on other PATEs whom I found in the library and courthouse. I will post them in the hope that they will help someone on the list. 1) Adaline PATE - resided in San Augustine County in 1837 according to the "Texas 1830-1839 Census" by Ronald Vern Jackson. She is also listed in the "San Augustine County TX Marriage Records Vol 1 1837-1858". She married Dwight Spencer 11 Nov 1837. 2) Louisa H. PATE - resided in Nacogdoches County, TX in 1839 (same reference as above). 3) Elizabeth PATE of Fayette County, TX is listed in the "Texas 1870 Mortality Schedule" by Ronald Vern Jackson (NOTE: she is the only PATE listed). She was born in Georgia, died in April, and (I think) was age 37. 4) Audrey, Birha (?) and Blanch PATE (minors) show up in the "1828 - 1940 Probate Cases of San Augustine County TX" (published by the San Augustine Public Library). The date was 14 Nov 1919 and the case was a Guardianship of Person and Property. The guardian was L. B. PATE. 5) Kennon PATE - in a scrapbook in very bad shape in the San Augustine Library labeled Pictures from the Past, there is a photo of the singing class at the old Denning School, taken about 1916. The only person identified is "Kennon PATE ... in back at left". 6) Edgar PATE - in The "Cradle of Texas: A Pictorial History of San Augustine County" compiled and edited by Charla Jones, there is a picture of a small boy of maybe 4 years identified as Edgar PATE. It is a Granberry School District No. 17 in San Augustine County picture taken in about 1909 or 1910 of a community get together at Thanksgiving. 7) John PATE - listed on the 1837 tax list in "1835 San Augustine District TX: An Edited Census of 1837, 1839, 1840, 1842, 1844, 1846, 18348 San Augustine County Tax Rolls & 1826 Muster Roll Ayish Bayou District" by Mrs. McXie Whitten Martin. 8) Elizabeth PATE - Marriage Records Married Rainey Colman 30 June 1879 9) Julia PATE - Marriage Records Married W T Wall 2 Oct 1888 10) Peter PATE - from the "First Settlers of San Augustine County, TX" by Gifford White; was listed in A Report of Claims for the Month of Feb 1838.
