Matthew Pate, b. c 1790, d. 1834 md (1) Unknown Matthew evidently had several children by a first marriage - one reseacher, Ernestine Collins, shows his first wife died when a daughter, Annie Pate was b. c 1815. Matthew Pate md (2) Jane Milliken-Pate (widow of his brother, Stephen Pate) Known Children: Elnatha Cain Pate, b. 10 Sep 1830, d. 6 Nov 1905 Matthew Pate, b. c 1832 The book "Dyer County & Newbern, TN" by Arahwana H Ridens shows that Mathew Pate & J Milliken reared three boys, Mathew and E Cain Pate and Mathew's step-son, Andrew Jackson Pate. Some read this to mean J Milliken Pate had ONLY 3 children - it could mean these are the only three they raised. There were 5 children who seemed to have been "farmed out" in the 1850 Dyer Co census M Pate (male) age 25 - b. c 1825 (Is this Matthew?) S D Pate (male) age 23 - b. c 1827 (Is this Stephen D?) E L Pate (female) age 20 - b. c 1830 Cain Pate age 19 - b. 1830 Amanda Pate age 15 - b. c 1835 Who did these children belong to? (Other than Cain, who was son of Matthew & Jane) There has been a lot of speculation on both these families - Stephen Pate & Matthew Pate - sure wish someone could come up with some answers. Jinks
