    3. I just got back from a trip to Dyer & Gibson Cos, TN in an effort to sort out the Pate families there -- and from what I found, it would appear to be a safe assumption that the following were the --9-- children of Jane Milliken Pate, the first 7 as children of Jane & Stephen Pate - the last 2 as children of Jane & Matthew Pate. One printed source says Jane & Matthew only had one son, E C Pate, and one states they had two sons, E C and Matthew, and Andrew Jackson Pate was son of Stephen & Jane. Since Amanda F Pate was still a minor in 1856, she would have been born after 1835, so am assuming she was the dau of Jane & Matthew Pate. In 1835 Jane Milliken Pate purchased 233 1/2 acres of land, and in the years after she died, the following sold their shares or undivided interest to Andrew Jackson Pate -- each child had approximately 25 1/2 or 26 acres, making up the 233 1/2 ac - all deeds described it was their share or undivided interest in the same 233 1/2 ac tract Dec 1844 - Mathew D Pate sold his 25 ac to A J Pate Feb 1849 - Wm Miller, and wife, Mary A; James M Pate and Stephen D Pate sold their shares - 25 1/2 ac ea Sep 1851 - Elkanah C Pate sold his 25 ac to A J Pate -- 1852 - John Rucker and wife, Sarah sold 26 ac to A J Pate Jul 1856 - Amanda F Pate (a minor) and Wm J McCoy & wife, Sciota McCoy sold their 2 shares to A J Pate I have found most of these children in census and/or cemetery records, so from this: Stephen & Jane Milliken Pate - Children: Sarah Pate, b. c 1814 md John Rucker (there is a John Rucker and wife, Sarah in 1860 Hot Springs Co, AR (which may or may not be the same, but seems to fit as to ages) Andrew Jackson Pate, b. 4 May 1815 Sciota Pate, b. c 1817 md William J McCoy (have not found in census) James M Pate b. c 1818 (in 1860 Gibson Co, TN) Mary A "Polly" Pate b. c 1819 md William Miller Stephen D Pate b. 30 Jul 1820, d. 2 Mar 1851 Matthew Daniel Pate, b. 13 Aug 1823, d. 27 Feb 1892 md (1) Ann D Sampson (2) Mary E Moore Davis-Shelton Matthew & Jane Milliken Pate Children: Elnatha/Elkanah Cain Pate, b. 10 Sep 1830, d. 6 Nov 1904 md Lucy F Pierce Amanda F Pate, b. c 1835 This COULD also fit in with the 1830 Dyer Co, TN census: Jane Pate age 30-40 Male 10-15 (Andrew J b. 1815) Female 10-15 (Sciota b. c 1817) Male 10-15 (James M b. c 1818) Female 10-15 (Mary A, b. c 1819) Male 5-10 (Stephen b. 1820) Male 0-5 (Matthew b. c 1823) (POSSIBLY Sarah b. c 1814 was already married???) Can anyone come up with another solution?? Jinks

    3. Jinks and PL Just returned last night and have not had time to digest the information, BUT you can put it in stone that E Cain was the only child of Jane and Mathew Pate of Dyer. Granddaughter's notes--good genealogist of Dyer. I'll get back to you.. Also quickly--if Jane were married, I would THINK that the land purchase would be in both names OR Amanda belongs to someone else. Meredith Margaret, Can you weigh in on this Meredith??? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jinks Lee" <jinksp@juno.com> To: <PATE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, October 27, 2003 8:26 AM Subject: [PATE] Pate's in Dyer Co, TN (M16) > I just got back from a trip to Dyer & Gibson Cos, TN > in an effort to sort out the Pate families there -- and > from what I found, it would appear to be a safe > assumption that the following were the --9-- children > of Jane Milliken Pate, the first 7 as children of Jane > & Stephen Pate - the last 2 as children of Jane & > Matthew Pate. 1. [PATE] Pates of Dyer & Gibson Co., TN

    3. Haven't posted for a very long time - in fact I was off the list for quite a while. So, I will try again in hopes that someone knows my Mom-in-law Virginia's family. Virginia's father was John Balthup Pate, and grandfather William "Will" Daniel Pate. Virginia was very young when her parents separated, so she doesn't remember much of anything. Her older sister who knew only a little passed away in 1998. There are no other children. I'd like to find out who the parents of William "Will" Daniel Pate and wife Frances "Frankie" Holland were. This is pretty much all I know of the family: 1 William Daniel 'Will' Pate b: May 1869 TN - +Frances 'Frankey' Holland b: Feb 1870 TN d: Abt. 1908 Dyer or Gibson Co., TN Mother: Francis 'Fanny' ---- 2 George Pate b: Jan 1897 TN d: Abt. 1917 In World War I ---- 2 John Balthup Pate b: Nov 13, 1901 Eaton, Gibson Co., TN d: Oct 06, 1981 Sikeston, Scott Co., MO (Last resided in Poplar Bluff, Butler Co., MO) -------- +Ruby Nell 'Nellie' Killion b: Apr 20, 1902 Obion Co., TN d: Apr 01, 1979 CA Father: James Monroe 'Jim' Killion Mother: Lucinda 'Cindy' Buchanan ---- *2nd Wife of John Balthup Pate: -------- +Grace V. Hodgeson b: May 06, 1903 d: Jul 27, 1972 (last resided Naylor, Ripley Co., MO) ---- 2 Arthur Pate b: Abt. 1904 Probably in Dyer or Gibson Co., TN ---- 2 Vila May (Veale? Viola May?) Pate b: Abt. 1907 *2nd Wife of William Daniel 'Will' Pate: - +Miss Emma This is what Virginia's sister wrote to me back in 1996: "My great-great-grandmother, my father's father, Will Pates mothers name the last we heard was Wilson; she was married 8 times I was told. (My note: It may actually have been his mother-in-law who married a Wilson). "My father was 7 when his mother died. His brother George (the eldest was 11, the younger boy was Arthur he was 4 yrs. The sister Veale, was a baby. Grandpa married not to long after grandmas death. It didn't work out. He married again to a woman we called Miss Emma." In 1900 Will, Frankey, the oldest son George were in the Dyer Co. census. Frankey must have died around 1908, and in the 1910 census the children are living in various households in Gibson Co., TN: George age 12 is with Birthie & Robert Boswell "as a son" John age 9 is a ward of Walker & Pricie Wilson Arthur age 5 is a ward of James D. & Birdie Bowie Vila May age 2 is living with grandparents Hiram & Frances Wilson I'm told that George was killed in 1917/1918 during WWII, and that he left a wife & infant son. I have no idea what became of Arthur. My Mom-in-law thinks that his grandson may be the golder Jerry Pate, but I don't know if that is true or not. In the 1910 Gibson Co., TN census, Vila May/Viola May/Veale May is living with her grandparents, Hiram & Frances Wilson who have been married for 3 years and is the 2nd marriage for both. It is only assumed at this point that Frances (her name is "Fanny" in the 1920 TN census) Wilson was Frankie's mother. Aunt Lea's recollection was that Will Pate's mother was the one who'd married a Wilson, and that it was the Pate grandmother's 8th marriage. Any thoughts, clues, or help would be greatly appreciate! Thanks, Marilyn Nickless
