Carol I regret to inform you that you have found one of the most unreliable and error filled genealogical documents, relating to the PATE surname, that exists. What you present is the core of the 1917 work of John Ben Pate of GA. The principal figure in John Ben Pate's work is Rev William Pate who allegedly was a son of Jacob Pate and Zillah Broach. You present the 9 child list of supposed children of Jacob Pate and Zillah Broach. Others use an 11 child list. Two things are important in dealing with the children of Jacob Pate and Zillah Broach. 1. Jacob Pate was DEAD no later than 21 Nov 1752. His last will and testament was made and signed in Surry Co VA 15 Jun 1752. The LWT is recorded in Surry Co VA Will and Deed Book 9, pages 810-811. It was filed for probate on 21 Nov 1752 by Zillah Pate, wife and named executrix, and William Clinch, also a named executor, on 21 Nov 1752. 2. There is no evidence, reliable or otherwise, that Jacob Pate and Zillah Broach Pate ever owned property in or resided in North or South Carolina. The 1752 LWT of Jacob Pate specifically mentions property owned by him. This property, by specification was 1) "lands in James City County" (VA) and 2) chattel slaves "all of my negroes." By inference you might conclude that he also was a property owner in Surry County VA. It is safe and proper to conclude that Jason Pate b ca 1754 Elizabeth Pate b 1756 John Pate b 1760 Were NOT children of Jacob Pate who died in 1752. These errors puts all of the "facts" you report in to a questionable category. Finally, you report that John Pate b ca 1760 1st md Hester Green and 2nd md Nancy Cowart. John Ben Pate in 1917 wrote that John Pate b ca 1760 married an unnamed bride and had three sons and secondly married (ca 1794) Nancy Cowart. It was, in my OPINION, the sons of John Pate and Nancy Cowart that were the progenitors of the Washington and Pulaski County (Hawkinsville) GA Pate lines. Three names in these Pate lines stand out. They are John HAYNES Pate, Anthony COWART Pate and REDDING Hamilton Pate. In my OPINION the first wife of John Pate b ca 1760 was PERHAPS Betty HAYNES. A John Pate married a Betty Haynes in Bedford Co VA 19 Jan 1788. There is some evidence that a John Pate or John PACHT married an Ester or Hester Greene in Kent Co RI or Rennesalaer Co NY. Most evidence on Rev William Pate points to a birth date of 1770 to 1776 not 1750. It is difficult to accept the proposition that Rev William Pate was a Revolutionary War Soldier. It is equally difficult to accept the proposition that a Jesse Pate b in Buncombe Co NC in early 1800's was a descendant of Jesse Pate and Zillah Broach of Surry Co VA. Joel, Whew - you knocked me out. Thanks for all the explanation! I guess I don't quite know how to respond - I have just begun to look at this line and now I will certainly look at it more carefully and from the bottom up. I have info from the booklet about Major Thomas Pate and his decendants. This info came from the Letters of Frances Shacklett Fast and Estie Stith Crabbe 1934 - 1966. I don't know how accurate this is as far as factual information. I use this kind of thing as a direction, but not as final proof. I have seen the info Jinks has on ancestry.com about Jacob and Zilla and realize he is unsure of some information, even though a dozen other people seemed to think it was fact. That is mainly why I asked if anyone knew anything about the line. If Jinks had some questions, I thought it was worth asking about. I think the thing that has attracted me is the naming pattern. Jesse is not a name in many of the Pate families and I find Jesse with a list of Pates in so. IL in the 1820's - Redding, Wm, etc. Names that fit in. I did find Redding and his brother Anthony Pate living with Elizabeth Thorn in Washington Co, GA in 1850. I am not sure yet who his parents were, but it might be another Redding Hamilton PATE. I am hoping to connect my Jesse Pate to one of the later generations of Samuel Jacob Pate - not caring so much about him - but finding the parents of my Jesse. I have no connecting point other than Sangamon Co, IL where I know he was, and Buncombe, NC which is where he said he was born. He married into the Zachariah Edwards family who came from Wake Co, NC to Robertson Co, TN and then to Macon Co, IL (by Sangamon) and Jackson Co, IA. The Pates and Edwards married in southern IL. I also was given some info on a John Bee Log PATE. Thanks for all your information. You made well thoughtout points on the research. Any suggestions as to where to go from here would be appreciated.
