Good morning all, Has anyone ever determined Samuel and Hugh Pate of the above named counties parentage? I believe they could possibly be brothers to my Nancy Pate (born 1800 TN) who married James Lindsey in Jefferson Co, TN June 1, 1819. And they are possibly the brothers to Lucinda Pate who married a cousin, Jeremiah Pate then Jacob Richards. (Per a Pate list member-Karen). James and Nancy Lindsey had sons Hugh, John, Samuel and Evan Lindsey and relocated to Coosa Co, AL in 1840 as did Jacob and Lucinda Richards with her son Emanuel Pate. Numerous land records tie the two families together in Coosa. Providence Babtist Church records in Jefferson Co, TN name many early Pates including Samuel who was a minister at Providence. Also mentioned are John Lindsey Sr. (probable father to James Lindsey), his known son John Lindsey Jr. and wife Elizabeth Atchley, Isaac Richards, (probable father of Jacob Richards, husband of Lucinda Pate) and Isaac Richards also appears to be the brother of Lydia Atchley, who is Elizabeth Atchley's mother. The earliest Pate mentioned at Providence is Sarah Pate in 1797, then an I. Pate in 1801. In 1803 Elizabeth and Fraley Pate are received into the church. Hannah Pate shows up in 1804. (Samuel Pate was married to Hannah Canterbury but her birth year is 1799). Elizabeth Pate is also mentioned in 1804 and Hannah and Sarah Pate again later in the year. In 1812 Samuel and Lucy Pate are received by experience. 1813 has Samuel in trouble for something I won't repeat. 1814 Lucy Pate is in trouble for whipping a neighbors boy. 1816 Hannah Pate is rec'd by recantation and Susannah Pate is dismissed. 1820 Hannah Pate Sr. is mentioned on the member list and Lucy Pate is excluded. 1821 Lucy Pate is in trouble again and is excommunicated. 1822 Hannah Pate Jr. is rec'd by experience. While John Lindsey Sr. is "distressed" with Sister Pate. 1824 the church welcomes back Samuel Pate. 1825 Roger Pate is asked to speak to a fellow member and Samuel Pate announces his calling to preach. 1827 Samuel and wife Hannah are mentioned on the member list as is another Hannah Pate. 1833 Thomas Pate is rec'd by experience. 1836 Thomas and wife Jane are dismissed. 1837 Thomas wishes to preach. 1838 Jane Pate is dismissed and Thomas is preaching out of the bounds of the church. 1839 Thomas is drinking. 1840 Hannah is mad at a fellow member. 1842 Josephine Pate is rec'd by experience as is Elizabeth Pate. 1847 Eliz is dismissed by letter. 1849 Emeline Pate is rec'd by experience as is Charles E. Pate. 1855 Charles E. is the clerk of the church. 1869 Charles Pate and wife Martha E. Pate are dismissed by letter. And in 1852 the church met at the home of William Pate. (I did not list all the Samuel Pate references as they were numerous...he was very involved with the church in the years after his calling) Dumplin Church records (Jefferson Co) mention James Pate in 1846 rec'd by experience. In 1849 James Pate and Rebecca and Mary Ann Lindsey request letters of dismission as they are going to a new church with Rebecca Jones. 1859 John and Elizabeth Pate are on the member list. The new church, Jones Chapel Babtist Church mentions Rachel, Adaline and Kasaner Pate on the 1849 member list. James Pate's name is crossed out and Dis 185? is written next to his name. Calvin Pate is also crossed out with Dec'd 1862 written next to his name. Then in the minutes Kasaner Pate, Mary Ann Lindsey and Caroline Pate all rec'd by letter in 1849. 1852 James Pate dismissed by letter. 1854 Caroline Pate in now Caroline Lindsey and is excommunicated due to a serious infraction. 1854 Calvin Pate is rec'd by letter. 1862 Calvin Pate died June 30th, 1862. All the church references seem to point to the families of Samuel and Hugh and they have family names in common with the other Pates in Jefferson Co; Jacob Pate and his sons Bird and Daniel but I can find no connection with them at this point. Any ideas? Many thanks for any reply! Best regards, Diana Dobbins
