Last October Joel asked if anyone had access to "Stephen F. Austin's Register of Families" edited by Villamae Williams and could post the PATE information from that source. I located the book at the Texas State Library in Austin today. Some interesting background information: "Article J of the massive colonization law of the State of Coahuila and Texas dated March 24, 1825, required that "any foreigner, already in the limits of the state of Coahila and Texas, who wishes to settle himself in it, shall make a declaration of that effect before the Ayuntamiento of the place which he selects as his residence." To complete the process of settlements, a local official had to administer to the foreigner an oath of allegiance to both the religion and laws of Mexico. Afterward, he recorded that the oath had been taken. More importantly for research, he was required to gather pertinent information on the immigrant. This included name, marital and/or family status, place of birth and/or place from where moved, and occupation." p. iii, David B. Gracy II, Texas State Archives The bad news is that there was only one PATE listed (but maybe the above will help if you have other lines who were in Texas early). PATE, John 1826 single moved from Mississippi Sharon Fitzpatrick PS I also copied down PATE references from the Henry County Georgia Land Records Volumes I, II and III. But it looks as if many of these records have already been posted to the list. If there is any interest, let me know and I will post my notes.
