Ellen: You indicate that Johanna Pate and Virgil Stewart Maddox married 1879 in Milam Co TX. I suspect that they married much earlier than 1879. The record that seems to fit best is - J. A. Pate married Virgil S. Maddox 8 Dec 1864 in McLennan Co TX. This marriage date (1864) would be much more accommodating for the birth of their dau, Nora Maddox, in 1868. The William Pate in the household next to Virgil S Maddox does have the same birth profile, i.e., IL/TN/TN as Johanna Pate Maddox. They are in the same birth cohort and you could be fairly safe to argue that they were siblings. I suspect that the couple, William and Susan Pate, were the W. Pate who married Susan Mrs Wilson in Grayson Co TX 12 Jan 1874. She apparently was the widow of a George Wilson of Grayson Co. TX. See 1870 census. If William Pate and Johanna Pate Maddox were siblings, who were their parents? Did they have other sibs? I scanned Illinois census data to see if I could find Johanna. Not much to go on. There was a single Pate family enumerated in the 1850 Union Co IL. This was the family of Elizabeth Pate. Apparently Elizabeth Skelton Pate the widow of Willey P Pate. Since Johanna Pate Maddox was b about 1854 this rules this family out. There were Pate families or households (3) in the 1835 state census of IL, but only heads of household were named. 1835 Union Co IL Index Francis Pate Pg 445 Jeremiah Pate Pg 447 William Pate Pg 446 I could find nothing to link William Pate and Johanna Pate to a Mary Katherine PAGE or to Hot Spring Co AR.
