    3. There is a Canaday PATE living in Pickens Co. AL (Raleigh PO) during the 1900 census. Can anyone identify his parents or which line he descends from? It's interesting to me because the LINDSEY family (James Franklin LINDSEY) had a son named Canaday...very unusual name. Any ideas where the name Canaday comes from? Thanks, Ed Waller

    3. Ed: Welcome. I think that Canaday Pate was born after the 1860 census of Tuscaloosa Co AL. He was enumerated in the 1870 census of Tuscaloosa Co AL as "Keneda" in the household of Charles R Pate, page 273, Sipsey Twsp, site 34/36. He appears as "Kenedy" in the 1880 census of Tuscaloosa Co AL in the household of (Charles) Raburn Pate, page 622, Enum Dist 156, sheet 9, Tuscaloosa, site 75/76. C. A. Pate married Ida Bellew Elledge 15 Oct 1886 in Pickens Co AL. See Pickens Marriage records Book B, Page 357. I would surmise that he died between 1902 and 1910. His widow and family were enumerated in the 1910 census of Tuscaloosa Co AL, Enum Dist 155, sheet 15, Precinct 16, site 52/53. His ninth and last child, Dolly Pate, b 23 Jul 1903, was listed in the enumeration. I would think that he was alive during the first half of 1902. Canaday and Ida B Pate had son named Murray R. (perhaps Raeburn) Pate. Murray R Pate was enumerated in the 1930 census of Tuscaloosa. He had a 10 year old son named Charles R Pate. I would conclude that Canaday A. Pate was the son of Charles Raeburn Pate and Mary "Polly" Shirley. Where the name Canaday came from is unknown. It is, no doubt, a surname. Perhaps it comes from the Shirley line. I believe that Ida B Pate died 16 Jan 1943 in Pickens Co AL- AL Death Certificate Index. My research on Pate graves in Tuscaloosa, Pickens and Walker Co AL continues. 3. Ed...this may be of interest to you: http://www.billputman.com/THE%20CANADAY%20FAMILY.htm Our Canaday Family most likely were Irish Quakers who came to America to be able to practice their religion in a new country without persecution. If they weren't Quakers back in Ireland, they soon became so here in America. The Irish spelling of the name could have been either Canaday or Kennedey, both pronounced about the same. ========== Ed-Janis wrote: > There is a Canaday PATE living in Pickens Co.
