    3. Mrs. Ellen Carr Wells Pate of Winston-Salem passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Sept. 21, 1917, in Duplin County to Robert Lee and Jennie Lee Wells. Mrs. Pate was a charter member of Covenant Presbyterian Church. Preceding Mrs. Pate in death was her husband Mr. E.V. "Jap" Pate. Surviving are a son, Ernest Vernon Pate Jr. of Holden Beach; a daughter, Linda Pate Rowe and husband Roy of Lexington; four grandchildren, Lorrie Gayle Pate of Raleigh, Gregory Neal Pate of Wake Forest, R. Len Rowe and wife Ginger of Cramerton and Stacy Rowe Verner and husband Paden of Gastonia; four great-grandchildren, Jake and Ashlen Rowe of Cramerton and Jack and Josh Verner of Gastonia; and a sister, Juanita Powell of Wallace. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today, Sept. 3, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Kevin Conley officiating. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Covenant Presbyterian Church with the Rev. Kevin Conley and the Rev. Bruce Powell officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Covenant Presbyterian Church, 3627 Konnoak Drive, Winston-Salem, NC 27127, or The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford, 600 College St., Oxford, NC 27565.
