Pate, son of Rev. William Pate, was born in Pulaski County Ga., January 29th 1817, and in 1841 was married to Miss Jane Moore, who was born in Gwinett County, Ga., Oct. 12, 1825. He was 5 feet 9 inches tall, with dark hair and gray eyes, and owned several farms, four hundred and seventy head of cattle, four hundred head of sheep, and one hundred head of hogs. He was a very liberal giver to charity and benevolence, and in one year gave eleven beeves, forty bushels of meal and two hundred and sixty pounds of bacon to widows, orphans and people too old to work. In 1858 he was a member of the first grand jury of Wilcox County. In a letter to his family, dated at Macon, Ga., Co. E, Fifth Ga. Reserves, Oct. 6, 1864, he speaks of Savannah, Charleston and Augusta. He writes of his mother as having lived in Augusta, of sickness in camp, of his son Bennett being with him. James (D.) Pate died of typhoid fever Aug. 28th, 1865; his property appraised at $8,325.00. Jincy Pate, his wife, died April 27th, 1887. The following children were born unto them: Bennett Pate, Oct. 2, 1842; Elijah M. Pate, Jan. 24, 1845; John T. Pate, Jan. 22, 1847; Mary Jane Wells, nee Pate, Nov. 12, 1848; Nancy Fitzgerald, nee Pate, May 14, 1851; Sarah Gibbs, nee Pate, April 20, 1854; Narcissa Moore Clements, nee Pate Aug. 2, 1858; Elizabeth Taylor, nee Pate, Feb. 29, 1856; James H. Pate, 1862; Benjamin Samuel Pate, April 23, 1864. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- This family lived in Wilcox Co GA. Their homestead apparently was later incorporated into Irwin Co GA Only the elder sons of James D Pate, William Bennett Pate b 1842, Elijah D M Pate b 1845 and John Thomas Pate b 1847, were old enough to serve in the Civil War. Elijah D M Pate died (1860) before the war began. >From family correspondence and military records we learn that James D Pate and two of his sons, William Bennett Pate and John Thomas Pate served with Confederate units. James D Pate, the father, served in Company E, 5th GA Reserves (Infantry) William Bennett Pate, a son, served in Company B, 19th GA Cavalry (Later Company G, 10th Confederate Cav and 5th Confederate Battalion (Cav) John Thomas Pate, a son, - no clear record, beyond family tradition, that he served. Perhaps someone may have a more definitive record for him. Joel
