Chris: I've run across several records that seem to support the assertion that John Allen Pate (also as Allen Pate) married Matilda Morton (also as Matilda Harriet Morton). Some suggest that they married in Breckinridge Co Kentucky others suggest that they married in Hancock Co Kentucky. My best GUESS (unproven) is that John Allen Pate married Matilda Harriet Morton in Spencer Co INDIANA on or about 14 Nov 1832. I THINK that John Allen Pate and Matilda Harriet Morton had 11 children. 1 JOHN ALLEN PATE d: 8 FEB 1886 -+ MATILDA MORTON --2 NANCY ELLA PATE --+ MR SKILLMAN --2 MARY R G PATE --2 TILLOTHA R PATE --2 EDWARD SAMUEL PATE --2 CULLEN COLUMBUS PATE --2 MARGARET L PATE 15 JUN 1840 - 7 MAY 1926 --+ 1st FELIX G WALKER 1 DEC 1836 - 18 NOV 1874 --+ 2nd SAMUEL TAUL --2 ACANTHUS ADDIS PATE --2 MINERVA JANE PATE --2 MARY E PATE --2 HETTY ANN PATE --2 LAURA E PATE *(?) --+ JEREMIAH TODD BATES I believe your g g/f to be EDWARD SAMUEL PATE md ANNA MARTHA HODGES in BRECKINRIDGE* CO KY 5 APR 1866 [SOURCE: LDS, 1880 CENSUS JEFFERSON CO KY] I do not have and index or survey of PATE and allied surname graves in Cave Hill (National) Cemetery near Louisville, Jefferson Co KY. I believe there is such an index in print, but I have not had access to it. Perhaps you could find it and post information from it. I do have one note from the military section of Cave Hill Cemetery Cave Hill National Cemetery. Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky Pate, Geo W, d. 01/28/1885, PVT K 65 IND INF, Orig Bur Louisville, Ky, Plot: 2906, * Private. Buried Grave 84, Sec 5, Cave Hill National Cemetery,Huntsville KY You asked about Civil War records. There are a multitude on reference books in print that I could suggest. I have extracted PATE names from most, if not all of the major works. I would surmise that you would be interested in any record of service for your g g/f Edward Samuel Pate. I have scanned all of my notes, Union (KY and IN) and Confederate (KY), and found no clear match. I did find a Sam Pate, private from KY, serving in Company I, 16th US Infantry USA. This would be a bit of stretch, but it is a possibility. These military reference materials are by no means 100% comprehensive and accurate. Often they do not include local militia or home guard records. Records from irregular, unorganized or partisan units are rare and difficult to verify. If you have family or alternate records of service, perhaps those records can be linked to others and verified. Joel
