Dear Pate Family Researchers, Can anyone on this list tell me with reasonable certainty whether John Thomas Pate was married to a woman named Henrietta Kirkland, and if so, who Henrietta's parents were? John Thomas Pate was the father of a Pate ancestor of mine named William Bennett Pate (married once to Victoria Love, and then to Maud Odom), a major land owner in Crisp and Turner counties. Jeremy: John Thomas Pate b 22 Jan 1847 d 24 Feb 1924 married Henrietta Kirkland b 28 Jun 1847 d 7 Jun 1906. Most researchers use 19 Jan 1867 as their date of marriage and Dooly Co GA as their place of marriage, however there is a note on the marriage license that their vows were exchanged in front of James Owen J.I.C., Wilcox Co GA [J.I.C. = Judge, Inferior Court]. John Thomas Pate and Henrietta Kirkland Pate are both buried in marked graves in Oklahoma Cemetery, Wilcox Co GA. In my opinion Henrietta Kirkland was the daughter of Irvin and Sinthy Kirkland. See 1850 census of Emanuel Co GA, page 450B, 28th Dist, site 94/94. This opinion is supported by the fact that the first child of John Thomas Pate and Henrietta Kirkland was a daughter name Cynthia Jane Pate 22 Apr 1868-1 Jul 1934. She, no doubt, was named for her maternal grandmother. The third child of John Thomas Pate and Henrietta Kirkland was a son, William (Sheep) Bennett Pate 2 Dec 1872-5 Jan 1960. William (Sheep) Bennett Pate married twice and had children with both wives. He first married (24 Jul 1892 Dooly Co) to Victoria V Love and second to (1906 Turner Co) to Sarah Maud Odom. William (Sheep) Bennett Pate and Victoria V Love had two children, the first was a son named Addie Lee (Boy) Pate b Oct 1896 d 24 Jul 1966. Addie Lee (Boy) Pate married Viola (Ola) Gilbert. They married ca 1914 in GA. Addie Lee Pate and Viola Gilbert had several children (8 I think). Your grandfather, William Bennett Pate b 24 Dec 1924 d 25 Jul 1990 was a son of Addie Lee Pate. As you probably know, William Bennett Pate 1924-1990 relocated from GA to Richmond, VA where he married in 1946.
