    3. Kerry Altenbernd [kaltenbernd@blackjackbattlefield.org] wrote the following inquiry on the PATE forum at GenForum. My reply follows the inquiry Joel INQUIRY I am trying to locate information on the family of Henry Clay Pate, who fought against the abolitionist John Brown in the Battle of Black Jack, June 2, 1856, in Douglas County, Kansas Territory. I am a member of the board of the Black Jack Battlefield Trust and we are looking for information on Henry's family for two reasons: 1. We want to locate his living relatives so we can invite them to attend the battle's sesquicentennial commemoration activities that are taking place on June 2nd and 3rd of this year, 2006. 2. We want to add to the rather sparse information we have on an important figure in early Kansas history. An increasing number of historians consider the Battle of Black Jack to have been the first battle in the struggle that was the American Civil War. The Trust is planning for a commemoration of the battle that will be worthy of the memory of those who fought there and of the battle's significance in American history. We want to have as many descendants or other relatives of the participants in attendance, but would especially like to have Henry's family represented since he was a key figure in the battle. Our website contains more information on the battle and the commemoration and can be found at www.blackjackbattlefield.org. There is a record on Familysearch.org for a Henry C. Pate, b. abt. 1832 in Va. His father is recorded as being an Edmund Pate, b. abt. 1785 in Bedford, Va. and d. November 22, 1852 in Charleston, Kanawha County, WV. His mother is recorded as being a Sarah "Sally" Bailey, b. abt. 1802 in Rockford County, Va., d. Oct. 6, 1878 in Boone County WV. Edmund and Sarah m. Jan. 1, 1823 in Lynchburg, Campbell County, Va. Henry is listed as having a wife, Susan (??), b. abt. 1832 in Va.(?) and two brothers: William D. Pate, b. abt. 1828 in Campbell County, Va., d. May 1880 in Boone County, WV, his wife being Rebecca B. Ward, b. abt. 1830 in Va.; and Ortho W. Pate, b. abt. 1840 in Bedford County, Va. and d. Feb. 1870 in Boone County, WV, no wife recorded. No children are recorded for Henry or his two brothers. According to another record on Familysearch.org, a Henery (sp) Clay Pate was born April 21, 1832 in Bedford, Va. and died in 1864. The Henry Clay Pate who fought in the Battle of Black Jack is know to have been in the Confederate cavalry during the Civil War and died in the Battle of Yellow Tavern in 1864. If these dates and relationships are correct, it appears that the Henry C. Pate in the Familysearch.org record may be the Henry Clay Pate whose relatives we are seeking. Does anyone have information that would either prove or disprove this? Does anyone have information on living relatives of Henry, descended from him, his brothers, siblings of his father and mother, or other relatives? If anyone can help, please let me know. Any assistance you can provide will be most appreciated. Thank you. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ REPLY Henry Clay Pate 1832-1864, Lawyer; Newspaper Journalist, Editor and Publisher; Artillery Weapon designer; Horseman; Militia Captain; and Confederate Calvary Commander. LCCN 89-35004 ISBN 0-8160-2204-6 During the battle of Yellow Tavern, Henry C Pate and Jeb Stuart ended their longstanding feud. Within a matter hours both had suffered mortal wounds. Pate was a native Virginian who had moved to Missouri by way of Kentucky and Ohio. Living close to the Kansas border, he led a Missouri militia force against John Brown in 1856. By the outbreak of the Civil War he was back in Virginia editing the Petersburg Bulletin. Enlisting in the Confederate army, he received the following assignments: captain, Petersburg Rangers (June 5, 1861); lieutenant colonel, 2nd Virginia Cavalry Battalion (May 1862); lieutenant colonel, 5th Virginia Cavalry (June 24 1862) and colonel, 5th Virginia cavalry (September 28, 1863). After seeing service in the Seven Days, 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, and Fredericksburg, he was hauled before a court-martial in March 1863. It was from this hearing that Jeb Stuart and John Pelham set out for Kelley's Ford where Pelham was killed. Pate soon rejoined his reg! iment and took part in countering Stoneman's raid during the Chancellorsville Campaign and at Gettysburg. Receiving a promotion to colonel, he led the regiment in the Bristoe and Mine Run campaigns and at the Wilderness. Then on May 11, 1864, at Yellow Tavern, Stuart directed that Pate make a desperate stand against the Union cavalry. He promised to hold them off. Stuart complimented his attitude and Pate offered his hand. With the two reconciled Pate rode to his assignment which he accomplished at the cost of his life. Stuart was mortally wounded later in the fight. From his death bed he told a staff officer of the reconciliation and praised Pate's service, stopping now and then from the pain of his mortal wound. The Petersburg Express of May 11, 1861, noted that Tappey & Lumsden had completed a five-shot cannon of 3.13-inch caliber weighing 300 pounds. It fired a four pound ball 1900 yards. A pair of these weapons was turned out. One burst during firing tests and the other was set aside for the duration of the war. It survives today at Petersburg*. The firm later turned out battery equipment. Between October, 1861, and July, 1863, deliveries were made of fifty-two gun carriages twenty-nine field and twenty-three heavy), thirty-two caissons, and one battery wagon. *[Petersburg Siege Museum] The Siege Museum 15 W.
