Jeremiah Elijah Pate b Nov 1852 in GA d 28 Oct 1912 in Callahan Co, TX was murdered. Back in Apr and May of 1999 we had a series of postings on PATE-L trying to identify a newspaper in or near Cross Plains, TX that might have carried an article about the murder. Long time PATE-L subscriber Alice Rickel was one of the posting researchers. We even went so far as to contact the University of Texas at Austin to ask for their assistance it searching their newspaper collection, but to no avail. Apparently I contacted the Callahan County library system. We hit a brickwall in finding out about the murder of Jeremiah Elijah. After seven years some of the answers about the murder of Jeremiah Elijah Pate have been found. Based on information recently provided to me I would say that Jeremiah Elijah Pate was murdered by one Darrell Slyvester Hollis and that Mr Hollis took his own life after he had killed Jeremiah Elijah Pate. The motivation for the murder of Jeremiah Elijah Pate remains in question. I recently received this note this note from Sonia Walker, who is with the Callahan Co TX Library system. "Joel, You had contacted me in the past and I wasn't that much help. Recently the county clerk for Callahan County was contacted by another Pate researcher (Clarice Pate Marek). She asked me about it and I explained that there were no Baird Star or Cross Plains Review for the time covering the murder. Then she came down saying that she had taken another look at Jeremiah's death certificate and noticed that the death certificate right above his, Darrell Sylvester Hollis had died of a self inflicted gunshot wound and died on the same day. So I looked on the Texas Tech's Southwest Collections website to see what towns in the surrounding counties had surviving newspapers, I found one, the Coleman Democrat-Voice, and contacted the research department to see if it made the paper in Coleman, it did. Coleman Democrat-Voice November 5, 1912 TWO MEN KILLED DUEL WITH GUNS Justice of Peace Conducting Investigation as to Killing of Old Citizens Cross Plains, Texas Nov. 1. Justice J. H, Robinson of Precinct No. 3, is conducting the inquest into the deaths of D. S. Hollis and J. E. Pate, two well-known old settlers, who were killed as the result of a gun duel. It appears that Mr. Pate was shot with a single barrel shotgun containing BB shot; that the load entered the right side and ranged upward, cutting away part of the heart. Mr. Pate's horse became frightened and ran away, Mr. Pate falling out of the buggy. He caught the front axle and was dragged about 500 yards, his left ear being torn away and that side of his face badly cut and bruised. Mr. Pate's funeral was held yesterday. The body of Mr. Hollis was buried at Sabano yesterday afternoon. The load had entered his left breast and ranged downward, breaking the skin on the left side of the back, but not coming through. Mr. Pate leaves a widow and five daughters, and Mr. Hollis is survived by a widow, two sons and one daughter. Why is still a mystery." Sonia Walker Callahan County Library
