All, Again, the Piney Grove church mentioned at that time was a Quaker church. The Pates and Peeles in that area in the early 1800 were in fact quakers. It is now a Methodist church. Lewis Pate left a will which is in the N.C. archives. In it, Lewis lists a son, Willoughby. Others, notably (for me at least) Billie Evans of Garland, N.C., have listed a brother of Lewis as being Willoughby Pate. I have not pursued the lines of brother Willoughby or Lewis' son Willoughby, but in records I remember seeing, I believe Willoughby, son of Lewis, was the father of the twins Mark and Martin Pate. Several years ago, I met the mother of ex-congressman Martin Lancaster at a Pate reunion in Goldsboro. She told me she was descended from Martin Pate for whom (I presume) Lancaster got his first name. I do know that Willoughby Pate is in a number of records, the dates of which would indicate they refer to the later of these two Willoughbys. One or more of them refer to transactions with at least one of the twins also. I'm sorry I haven't put the records I've seen in my computer. They're buried in paper files. My own Pate family cemetery was (some years back when I visited it) in a tobacco field on a farm near Memorial Primitive Baptist Church. I assume though that the Pate Cemetery mentioned here is somewhere else. Is it listed in the Wayne cemeteries book?
