    1. Re: [PATE] Latin translation for Pate memorial in Melton Mowbray

    3. Johnette, I received a personal email from Gerald Pait, pointing out how complex Latin could be to translate. Words are subject to many interpretations and may vary according to purpose and level of usage and the age in which it was written. I believe that the inscription on the monument of Sir John and Elizabeth Pate may not encounter some of the usual problems. We know that it was a formal memorial to deceased parents, and we know it was written c. 1680. These facts should make the translator's task a little simpler. I appreciate you sending this to your son's acquaintance in Canada. We will not know the importance of this inscription until it is translated. It may or may not contain new information. But it is interesting that it has not been translated into English, to my knowledge, for about 330 years. A. J. My son's girlfriend's father knows Latin. He is a Catholic and goes to Latin Church services. They live in Canada. I have emailed the info to them today. I'm sure I will hear soon the entire thing.
