I have used footnote.com and for free, I found my dad's WWII "official written army account" of when his plane was shot down by friendly fire. He and 6 others were POW's in Germany, 4 of the crew did not make it home. I learned a lot about this time in my dad's life, I was able to post pictures of this brave crew. I also found Civil War records. I did subscribe, however I have not had much time to venture further on the site, it has been good for me so far .
