Meridith Sheridan, a Pate List Serve subscriber of long standing, has been attempting to share some research notes on Pate and allied families in Giles Co., TN The List Serve is kind of difficult to use with attachment, picturesor fowarded e-mail Subject: Fwd: Giles CO, TN From: <[email protected]> Date: Wed, 13 Oct 2010 15:21:45 +0000 To: [email protected] Fwd: Giles CO, TN Subject: Giles CO, TN From: <[email protected]> Date: Tue, 12 Oct 2010 11:28:36 -0400 To: [email protected] Dear Joel, I hope you are feeling well and rested since you dreadful summer and lovely Alaskan trip. Several things hace come to mind in that now I am in Italy for the while, Dick is back at work and I have time on my hands. Did you get Margaret Pate's Disc??? (I think I sent it just before I had the 2nd leg and knee redo. The knee works but is not perfect. They believe nerves were disturbed among other problems. However.) I am beginning to think that when I appear in the states again, I should have it recopied without the library logo. They had no right to do that and while I appreciated the copying, it is not correct. As to Giles CO, they seem to have some new records up (or new to me). This appears to be an 1880s book on Giles Co Tn (or records or recollections) by McCallum. Chapter 4 p.34 He says Section 10 (9)Buford Station: 1808 John Pate and Ostin Carter settled on lands now owned by AA Dickerson. They riased corn. ...Robert Guthrie and Col L. (I believe that this is the same neighborhood where a "Widow Clark and her sons live" ((Nancy Clark widow of Jesse Clark Sr., mother of Henderson and Jesse Clark of Dyer Co, TN is known to have made it to Dyer from Washingion Co TN)....Cornersville, "OLd William Henderson and brother JOhn H. Archibald Crockett (Davy Crockett hunted with one of the Clarks according to family lore.)" P. 39 "Old man Patite first settled Locust Hill" "where old Silas Flournoy settled" Then a mention of Indian Creek Primative Baptist Church. Macallum Sect 17, p45 Shoal and Sugar Creeks lst settlers Riggs and Morgan. Kallit Nail and Wm Noblett very early and all on Indian land. (Joel, you may remember my long exchange with Jinks on the Nail will in western TN, the county below Dyer I think. In it Nail left land in Dyer county to the 4 Pate boys, (Andrew Jackson Pate, his 1/2 brother Cainey (E. Cain Pate, and I think I remember the other two as Mathew and Stephen, but have to check. All of the brothers (and I think they were brothers)sold the land to AJ Pate. Jinks worked with the theory that perhaps Jane Millican Pate who married her brother in law Mathew Pate had gone on to marry Mr. Nail. I do not believe this and think the story goes back to either her Jane's youth (was she a Nail before she became a Millican , then a Pate (Stephen and then Mathew Pate-the brothers.) I am convinced the boys were all brothers and of course do not know where my Elizabeth Pate Clark fits.)) Nail lived at the foot of Na ils Hill (now Minor Hill). Trial leading from Nail's hill towards Huntsville.
